Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This journal is for those who are hungry for more. The Captivating Guided Journal is designed to complement your reading of Captivating – there is one chapter in the journal for every one of the twelve chapters in the book. Using this journal means you’re hungry for more. More of Jesus, more healing, more restoration, and more transformation into the woman you were created to be. You even get more in the journal itself! The “Windows to the Heart” and “Lifting the Veil” sections feature special features and excerpts from other books and movies that you won’t find in the companion book. By the way, this is not your normal “workbook.” There are no wrong answers. No fill-in-the-blanks. You don’t have to struggle or worry about “getting it right.” Who wants another workbook anyway? We have enough work to do already. Besides, calling this a workbook would imply that the messages in the book Captivating are to be mastered. And mastered in a measurable way. Not at all. The messages in the book are to be pondered, considered. Some embraced. Some practiced. Some set aside for a later time. In this journal you will experience… Excerpts from the companion book, Captivating Guided prayers “Windows to Your Heart” – insights from movies, books, and music “Lifting the Veil” – an activity or exercise to try Journaling prompts correlating to each section of the chapter in the book This journal is for your heart. Engaging with it says that you are willing to take a journey of discovery with him. You have said “yes” to God. You are continuing to say “yes.” May he meet you in the deep places of your heart and bring you hope, courage, healing, and the delights of intimacy that only God can bring. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the complex relationships that exist between Christianity, rape culture, and gender violence. Each chapter explores the various roles that Christian theologies, teachings, and practices have played in shaping contemporary understandings of gender violence and in sanctioning rape-supportive cultural belief systems and practices. Our contributors explore this topic from a range of disciplinary perspectives, including theology, gender and queer studies, cultural studies, pastoral care, and counseling. Together, the chapters in this volume testify to the considerable influence that Christianity has had, and continues to have, in directing conversations within the Christian tradition around gender violence and rape culture. They therefore invite readers to engage fruitfully in these conversations, fostering transformative dialogues with the Christian community about our shared responsibility to tackle the current global crisis of gender violence.

Book excerpt: In postapartheid Cape Town—Africa's gay capital—many Pentecostal men turned to "ex-gay" ministries in hopes of “curing” their homosexuality in order to conform to conservative Christian values and African social norms. In Desire Work Melissa Hackman traces the experiences of predominantly white ex-gay men as they attempt to forge a heterosexual masculinity and enter into heterosexual marriage through emotional, bodily, and religious work. These men subjected themselves to daily self-surveillance and followed prescribed behaviors such as changing how they talked and walked. Ex-gay men also saw themselves as participating in the redemption of the nation, because South African society was perceived as suffering from a crisis of masculinity in which the country lacked enough moral heterosexual men. By tying the experience of ex-gay men to the convergence of social movements and public debates surrounding race, violence, religion, and masculinity in South Africa, Hackman offers insights into the construction of personal identities in the context of sexuality and spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever bought that one book that utterly changed your spiritual life, made it deeper, quicker, and 23% more efficient? Neither has anyone else, but that has not stopped the relentless manufacture of fad products and programs that promise a “better way.” Fads, which have led to havoc in the wider culture, have also found their way into Christendom. Now we have specifically Christian examples of invented problems, with churches struggling over musical choices, carpet colors, and various techniques. Christians are frequently following the world, blissfully unaware in their thinking that “the new thing” must be better merely because it is new. 23% More Spiritual! examines some of the most well-known fads of the past century, provides a history of how we got here, outlines the problems in pursuing “the fad,” and offers a solution, one seeking goodness and perfection.

Book excerpt: PATHS LESS TRAVELED By: Gordon DuBois Many a fascinating tale is told in this outstanding collection of hiking columns penned by avid tramper Gordon DuBois. Paths Less Traveled takes the reader along trails – and sometimes off-trail - far and wide across the Lakes Region, the White Mountains, and the lonesome North Country. Within these pages you’ll find vivid narratives of treks to peaks, ponds, waterfalls, old logging railroad grades, abandoned villages, big trees, little-known conservation lands, and many other interesting destinations. The trips range from family-friendly strolls to epic bushwhacks and daunting rock scrambles. Along the way the author provides a generous helping of local historical lore. Also included are useful tips on safe hiking in summer and winter, leave no trace principles, senior fitness, and a canine perspective from Reuben, the author’s faithful trail companion. Paths Less Traveled will be a treasured addition to any New Hampshire hiker’s bookshelf. Steven D. Smith, Co-Editor of the AMC White Mountain Guide Paths Less Traveled describes several trails in Meredith complete with details on how to find them and what to expect when I get there. I am a novice hiker with a young dog and Gordon's book has helped us to get started on adventures without feeling overwhelmed by trails that are too challenging or too crowded for us. Erin Apostolos, Director Meredith Public Library If you are an explorer who likes to seek out destinations that are a bit different or are off the radar away from the crowds, Paths Less Traveled is for you. Author Gordon DuBois draws upon his extensive experience hiking throughout New England to bring the reader to some locations that are more well-known and many that are not, some by trail and others by bushwhack. Peppered with personal anecdotes and interesting historical narratives, Paths Less Traveled is a captivating read and will appeal to both the experienced and novice hiker.
