This book was released on 2007 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on short stories from both the former British colonies and Great Britain itself, An Anthology of Colonial and Postcolonial Short Fiction presents a fascinating cross-section of writing in English, a literature politicized by the experience of colonization. Great short stories from Ireland, Canada, the Caribbean, India, Pakistan, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand demonstrate the diversity of the postcolonial experience around the world from the late nineteenth century to the present. Also including rich background materials and thorough explanatory footnotes to help students read these stories with an informed eye, this anthology is a must for any student interested in world literature in general and postcolonial literature in particular. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial and Postcolonial Literature is the leading critical overview of and historical introduction to colonial and postcolonial literary studies. Highly praised from the time of its first publication for its lucidity, breadth, and insight, the book has itself played a crucial part in founding and shaping this rapidly expanding field. The author, an internationally renowned postcolonial critic, provides a broad contextualizing narrative about the evolution of colonial and postcolonial writing in English. Illuminating close readings of texts by a wide variety of writers - from Kipling and Conrad through to Kincaid, from Ngugi to Noonuccal and Naipaul - explicate key theoretical terms such as 'subaltern', 'colonial resistance', 'writing back', and 'hybridity'. This revised edition includes new critiques of postcolonial women's writing, an expanded and fully annotated bibliography, and a new chapter and conclusion on postcolonialism exploring keynote debates in the field relating to sexuality, transnationalism, and local resistance.

Download or read book Eating and Identity in Postcolonial Fiction written by Paul Vlitos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the fiction of four postcolonial authors: V.S. Naipaul, Anita Desai, Timothy Mo and Salman Rushdie. It argues that meals in their novels act as sites where the relationships between the individual subject and the social identities of race, class and gender are enacted. Drawing upon a variety of academic fields and disciplines — including postcolonial theory, historical research, food studies and recent attempts to rethink the concept of world literature — it dedicates a chapter to each author, tracing the literary, cultural and historical contexts in which their texts are located and exploring the ways in which food and the act of eating acquire meanings and how those meanings might clash, collide and be disputed. Not only does this book offer suggestive new readings of the work of its four key authors, but it challenges the reader to consider the significance of food in postcolonial fiction more generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern with identity and belonging, with place/dis-placement is a major feature of postcolonial literature and the theme of alienation cannot but be “topical” in the literatures of the countries that have experienced the cultural shock and bereavement, and the physical and psychic trauma of colonial invasion. The purpose of this volume is to qualify the difference one is faced with when a postcolonial ex-centric text is addressed, by collecting essays concerned with writers from Southern Africa, the Caribbean, Australia, the Indian subcontinent and Asian diaspora(s). While giving contextual specifics their due, it shows how the theme of alienation, when perceived through the anamorphic lens of madness, is magnified and charged with an excruciatingly questioning and destabilizing power, laying bare political as well as existential and moral urges. From the ex-centric, broadly exilic position, it is the ideology and practice of colonialism that demand to be rubricated as psychopathology. More broadly, as these essays highlight, in fiction the mad character’s ex-centric vision is a continuous warning against the temptation to believe in those discourses that pass themselves off as reflecting the given, “natural”, order of things.

Book excerpt: A concise introduction to a core and popular area of literary studies. Provides extended case studies which survey and summarise key critical debates and as such are invaluable for teaching. Places the emphasis on the text first and theory second, thus providing a unique and much needed approach to postcolonial literature, which in the past has been maligned for being theory driven. Takes an historical approach, thus covering a good range of texts that have generated lots of critical discussion and evaluative materials. Written clearly for an undergraduate reader, with introductory overviews at the start of each chapter.
