Book excerpt: From the author of The Many-Colored Land comes the saga of a land beyond the horizon, where the quest for power is eternal, where magic and mystery are feared above all, and one man sought to reign. On a remote island, far in the Boreal Sea, four kingdoms have struggled against one another since time out of mind. Most mysterious is the marshland kingdom of Moss—feared by the others and ruled by the Sorcerers. Soon, all will be put in peril’s way. In recent years, three of the kingdoms have suffered fearsome volcanic eruptions that choke crops, famine among people, and an ailing leader on his deathbed. Only Moss, poverty-stricken and desolate at the best of times, seems untroubled. But Prince Conrig of Cathra, who waits patiently as his father, the king, wastes slowly away, is in league with his lover, the seductive sorceress Princess Ullanoth of Moss. And if their secret alliance succeeds in its goal, the warring kingdoms of High Blenholme will be united once and for all—under the iron hand of one supreme rule.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementing Science-Fiction: The Early Years, which surveys science-fiction published in book form from its beginnings through 1930, the present volume covers all the science-fiction printed in the genre magazines--Amazing, Astounding, and Wonder, along with offshoots and minor magazines--from 1926 through 1936. This is the first time this historically important literary phenomenon, which stands behind the enormous modern development of science-fiction, has been studied thoroughly and accurately. The heart of the book is a series of descriptions of all 1,835 stories published during this period, plus bibliographic information. Supplementing this are many useful features: detailed histories of each of the magazines, an issue by issue roster of contents, a technical analysis of the art work, brief authors' biographies, poetry and letter indexes, a theme and motif index of approximately 30,0000 entries, and general indexes. Science-Fiction: The Gernsback Years is not only indispensable for reference librarians, collectors, readers, and scholars interested in science-fiction, it is also of importance to the study of popular culture during the Great Depression in the United States. Most of its data, which are largely based on rare and almost unobtainable sources, are not available elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many Christians, the concept of spiritual warfare involves scenarios that are often enchanting, extravagant, and even parapsychological. Hard-lined skeptics respond by treating it instead as an archaic and outmoded superstition--a farce. While we might think a simple reading of Scripture will settle the matter, this has not been the case since those writing on the subject are (tacitly) influenced by dubious philosophical commitments and presuppositions left unchecked. This groundbreaking book incorporates philosophical reasoning in formulating for the everyday Christian a robust biblical doctrine of spiritual warfare. It is a serious but readable attempt to understand what spiritual warfare is by addressing both the theological and philosophical issues involved. The Conqueror's Tread dares to take a reasoned approach to pressing questions such as: -Do supernatural beings really exist? If so, what are they and what can they do? -Are there territorial spirits? -Is exorcism a part of spiritual warfare? -Does spiritual warfare involve speaking aloud, prayerwalking, and breaking curses? -What can evil spirits do to Christians? Can Christians be demon-possessed? -Why would God allow his people to be in a state of conflict with evil spirits? -What is Christian holiness and how do we pursue it? -What role does apologetics have? and many more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Weldon Institute in Philadelphia, a mob of zealous balloon enthusiasts plans to conquer the sky in a state-of-the-art dirigible. When a stranger, the mysterious Robur, declares that the future belongs not to balloons but to heavier-than-air flying machines, the Institute scornfully dismisses the idea. But Robur demands vengeance—and has a unique flying machine that will allow him to take it. By turns an impassioned argument for aviation, a wild proto-steampunk adventure, and a jubilant celebration of the dream of flight, Robur the Conqueror ranks among Jules Verne’s most iconic and influential works. Its technological speculations, including the unforgettable aircraft Albatross, are a vibrant snapshot of nineteenth-century scientific innovation. This, the first complete English translation of Verne’s 1886 novel, includes an insightful introduction, explanatory chapter notes, never-before-published glimpses of Verne’s original manuscript, all the first-edition illustrations by Léon Benett, and an up-to-date Verne biography and primary and secondary bibliography. It is an essential new edition of a seminal science fiction classic.

Book excerpt: Jael the Conquer By Bishop Donald Downing Through Biblical research, visions, and inspiration from the Holy Spirit, Bishop Downing brings to life Judges 4 & 5, the tale of a female warrior, a little-known heroine of the Bible: Jael the Conqueror. Like her counterpart David, who slew the giant Goliath, Jael was a black Kenite maiden chosen by God to fulfill her destiny, to slay the giant Sisera and deliver the children of Israel from bondage to Jabin, the wicked king. Deborah the prophetess, a judge over Israel, prophesied that the Lord would sell Sisera into the hands of a woman. As Sisera came running into her tent, fleeing from Barak, Jael knew her life was in danger. She learned how to use her inner weapons of faith and wisdom, as God gave her strength to use milk, a hammer and a nail. As she placed the nail against Sisera's head, she felt the anointing power of God as never before. The Bible states in Judges 4:21, the nail went completely through Sisera's forehead and fastened itself deep into the ground. Jael professed her faith in the true and living God and chose to worship with the Israelites, despite her ancestral lineage. She never allowed her battles to be greater than her worship, prayers and praises to her God. Bishop Donald Downing gives a richly imaginative look into the possible life of Jael the Conqueror, from her childhood to adulthood, as she fought for the rights and protection of all women. He is of the opinion that we should not judge the battles of others if we are not willing to help them to fight their wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deepen your meditation with advice on Buddhist practice from celebrated masters of Tibet’s nonsectarian rimé tradition. For generations, Buddhist masters in Tibet have composed sheldam, poignant instructions tailored to the needs of their disciples in the form of short works of advice. Often difficult to find in publication, these works cover topics ranging from practicing while ill to sitting in solitary retreat to recognizing the nature of mind. This collection focuses on an influential and inspiring generation of Buddhist teachers: the nineteenth-century ecumenical, or rimé, tradition of eastern Tibet. A Gathering of Brilliant Moons provides lively translations of nineteen pithy and profound works by these great masters, along with essays by their translators which explore the aesthetic qualities of their chosen works, highlight their ecumenical features, and comment on the journey of translation. Includes works from Jamgon Kongtrul, Dza Patrul Rinpoché, Ju Mipham Rinpoché, Dudjom Lingpa, The Third Dodrupchen, Do Khyentsé, Tokden Sakya Sri, Jikmé Lingpa, Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen, Getsé Mahapandita, Shangton Tenpa Gyatso, and Bamda Thupten Gelek Gyatso. This book arose from a unique conference on Tibetan translation, where the fourteen translators shared their process with each other and received feedback from their peers with a special focus on the literary aspects of the source texts. As a reflection of this genesis, the accompanying essays in this volume by the translators explore the aesthetic qualities of their chosen works, highlight ecumenical features in them, and comment on the journey of translation. This unique book will be welcomed by religious scholars, Buddhist practitioners, and meditators.

Book excerpt: A former evil villain is out to save the realm he once tried to conquer in this “action-packed” debut fantasy with “an intriguingly twisty plot” (Booklist). In the realm of Imphallion, there once was a nightmare known only as the Terror of the East. Nigh invulnerable in his magical black armor and aided by unholy minions, he laid waste to all in his path on his all-consuming quest to take control of the land. But at the crucial moment, his will failed. His army fell. And taking a young noblewoman hostage, he vanished without a trace. Years later, Corvis Rebaine is a simple man, content with his loving wife and children. The terrible deeds of his past life are dead and buried along with his former name—until his daughter is taken by a maniacal young warlord looking to complete the Terror’s conquest. Now, spurred to action by a newborn fury, Rebaine must do the unthinkable—don the dark armor once again, gather his once-loyal minions, and fight to save both the family he loves and the country he once almost destroyed. And all who stand in his way will have one final thought before death . . . The Terror has returned. “Fans of Joe Abercrombie, Scott Lynch and Patrick Rothfuss will find Ari Marmell much to their liking.” —SF Site

As the centuries between these two events pass, as Britain emerges from the ruins of Roman rule to become a vibrant, rich power in its own right, as invasions ebb and flow and Kings rule and die, a single thread is spun and stretched. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William J. Bordeaux was a bona-fide member of the Brule band of the Sioux tribe. His grandfather James Bordeaux was one of the early French fur traders who bravely carried on his trade and barter with the Sioux when the virgin prairies of the west were still an open frontier. A lineal descendent of Red Cormorant Woman (Húntkálutawin), his grandmother, he was well versed in his mother tongue. Being proficient in several dialects of the native language, he was able to converse with sage and grizzled old warriors and thus obtain information impossible for a white man to learn. His close union with his own tribe and daily conversations with them is an assurance that no doubtful, or transcribed evidence, will appear on these pages. In Bordeaux’s search for material for a history of his people, he spent considerable time traveling and talking to the oldest Indians on the different Sioux Indian Reservations. Through his research he stored up and accumulated a wealth of stories and legends, with awe inspiring fables and facts that would be valuable to story writers. These fragmentary myths and authentic facts connected with his people would have been lost without these writings. In his travels for the purpose of obtaining datum relative to the hostile activities by the different war chiefs, he found one warrior that stood out alone, excelling all other Sioux war braves, as to courage, and cunning, “Crazy Horse,” an Oglála Sioux.
