Download or read book Pagan Christmas written by Christian Rätsch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-10-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the sacred botany and the pagan origins and rituals of Christmas • Analyzes the symbolism of the many plants associated with Christmas • Reveals the shamanic rituals that are at the heart of the Christmas celebration The day on which many commemorate the birth of Christ has its origins in pagan rituals that center on tree worship, agriculture, magic, and social exchange. But Christmas is no ordinary folk observance. It is an evolving feast that over the centuries has absorbed elements from cultures all over the world--practices that give plants and plant spirits pride of place. In fact, the symbolic use of plants at Christmas effectively transforms the modern-day living room into a place of shamanic ritual. Christian Rätsch and Claudia Müller-Ebeling show how the ancient meaning of the botanical elements of Christmas provides a unique view of the religion that existed in Europe before the introduction of Christianity. The fir tree was originally revered as the sacred World Tree in northern Europe. When the church was unable to drive the tree cult out of people’s consciousness, it incorporated the fir tree by dedicating it to the Christ child. Father Christmas in his red-and-white suit, who flies through the sky in a sleigh drawn by reindeer, has his mythological roots in the shamanic reindeer-herding tribes of arctic Europe and Siberia. These northern shamans used the hallucinogenic fly agaric mushroom, which is red and white, to make their soul flights to the other world. Apples, which figure heavily in Christmas baking, are symbols of the sun god Apollo, so they find a natural place at winter solstice celebrations of the return of the sun. In fact, the authors contend that the emphasis of Christmas on green plants and the promise of the return of life in the dead of winter is just an adaptation of the pagan winter solstice celebration.

This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Age, Neopagan, and New Religious Movements is the most extensive study to date of modern American alternative spiritual currents. Hugh B. Urban covers a range of emerging religions from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, including the Nation of Islam, Mormonism, Scientology, ISKCON, Wicca, the Church of Satan, Peoples Temple, and the Branch Davidians. This essential text engages students by addressing major theoretical and methodological issues in the study of new religions and is organized to guide students in their learning. Each chapter focuses on one important issue involving a particular faith group, providing readers with examples that illustrate larger issues in the study of religion and American culture. Urban addresses such questions as, Why has there been such a tremendous proliferation of new spiritual forms in the past 150 years, even as our society has become increasingly rational, scientific, technological, and secular? Why has the United States become the heartland for the explosion of new religious movements? How do we deal with complex legal debates, such as the use of peyote by the Native American Church or the practice of plural marriage by some Mormon communities? And how do we navigate issues of religious freedom and privacy in an age of religious violence, terrorism, and government surveillance?

Download or read book Thy Kingdom Come written by Harold L. Patterson and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thy Kingdom Come is a panoramic overview of the present reign of Jesus Christ at the right hand of God the Father and of the future consummation of that reign. It presents three authoritative apostolic New Testament guidelines for the interpretation of the Old Testament prophecies. It fairly examines the three main positions on the millennium and offers scriptural conclusions that incorporate elements of truth from all three. Detailed expositions of the 110th Psalm and the book of Revelation are based on the apostolic guidelines. Harold Patterson was born in Portland, Oregon in 1920. In 1942 he was appointed as a Patrol Inspector in the Immigration Border Patrol, and was assigned to work on the Mexican border in Southern California. His career as a Border Patrolman was interrupted by military service during WW II. During his military service he met and married Shirley Van Hamm in Denver, Colorado. In 1951 Harold and Shirley enrolled in BIOLA Bible College in Los Angeles. After graduation they accepted teaching positions in Taholah, Washington on the Quinault Indian Reservation. They remained in Taholah for 17 years and served the Indian community in various ways during that time. To upgrade his professional skills Harold earned the Bachelor of Education degree at Seattle Pacific University and the Master of Education degree at the University of Washington. In 1972 Mr. Patterson was appointed Associate Supervisor of Indian Education for the State of Washington, and served in that capacity for nine years. He also served as a lay minister and Bible teacher in various churches. In 1972 the Pattersons moved to a ranch at Brooklyn, Washington. Throughout the years Harold maintained a very close relationship with the Quinault people, and in 2005 he was adopted as an enrolled member of the Quinault Indian Nation.

The yearning to slow down and simplify, return to the earth, and maybe even"rewild" what has been tamed in ourselves persists even though that dream may seem ever more remote in contemporary life. Danielle Dulsky shows that even in our high-tech and high-pressure lives, it is possible to manifest your own "year of the wild" and to tap into often-forgotten holy wisdom. Seasons of Moon and Flame guides you to live cyclically while working with the archetype of the Sacred Hag, or wild grandmother, who appears in various guises. Wonderfully inclusive, with adaptations for families, spiritual groups, and other traditions, this book is a potentially life-changing guide to living mystically, magically, and in empowering harmony with the worlds of spirit and nature.
