Book excerpt: Annie thought she was making great strides in learning to trust Flynn. She can actually touch him--well his back. Flynn is less than enthusiastic about this growth. Annie learns her friend Stacy is missing, and she thinks Stacy’s boyfriend, Robert, has done something to her after Annie and Stacy uncovered his dark secret. With Annie’s family history, the police refuse to believe her. What Robert says is really going on shocks Annie to her core. He claims someone is trying to kill Annie and Flynn. Annie’s not sure if she should believe Robert, but he keeps dogging her steps. She’s starting to wonder if the person who’s trying to kill her isn’t Robert himself. That is until Robert ends up dead. It’s Halloween, and Annie’s life is about to take a turn toward the paranormal, as if things aren’t wild enough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains fourteen essays in which different aspects of gerard Bucher's "thanatopoietic hypothesis" are examined. Initially, five papers (by Wilson Baldridge, Claire Nouvet, Jean-Michel Rabate, Helene Domon and Metka Zupancic) were presented at the International Association for Philosophy and Literature (IAPL), during its 2001 meeting in Atlanta. Subsequently Michel Deguy and Pierre Ouellet, together with Christian Garaud, Kuisma Korhonen, Michael Degener, and Maurizio Godorecci, were invited to explore various implications of Bucher's hypothesis. Bucher's own work, as shown in his contribution to this volume, analyzes the connection between our experience of death and the establishment of poetry as a means of approaching the truth of being, of aestheticism, and of ethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simone Weil (1909-1943) was a defining figure of the twentieth century; a philosopher, Christian, resistance fighter, anarchist, feminist, labour activist and teacher. She was described by T.S. Eliot as 'a woman of genius, of a kind of genius akin to that of the saints', and by Albert Camus as 'the only great spirit of our time'. Originally published posthumously in two volumes, these newly reissued notebooks are among the very few unedited personal writings of Weil's that still survive today. Containing her thoughts on art, love, science, God and the meaning of life, they give context and meaning to Weil's famous works, revealing her unique philosophy in development and offering a rare private glimpse of her singular personality.

Chāndogya Upaniṣad written by Som Raj Gupta and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chandogya Upanisad: The culture it reflects is remote and archaic, the texture of its ritualistic and contemplative symbolism thick and dense-virtually a closed book for us moderns. A sustained self-submitting attentiveness, however, discloses its language as resonating disturbingly modern notes, focusing our attention on many of our pathologies as well as our possibilities, pathologies and possibilities that have escaped the notice of us moderns. The spirit of quiet hermeneutics that characterizes this study illumines many an opaque spot in this text, solves many an interpretive puzzle, turns many of its 'archaic naivetes' into living and compelling profundities. We are made to realize that what some moderns call Gestell is far more primordial than they would envisage it to be, far more ominous and primitive, tragic and persistent. A radical transformation is required, an ontological transformation. Not mere 'a masterly exposition' of an ancient text is, therefore, this study, but 'an authentic springboard for fresh philosophical thinking fecundating (the) two shores of the human experience: East and West'. The first three (published) Vols. are on (i) Isa, Kena, Katha and Prasna Upanisads; (ii) Mundaka and Mandukya Upanisad with Gaudapada Karika; (iii) Taittiriya and Aitareya Upanisads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parables--used by Jesus to reveal to us the kingdom of God, used to move us from being bystanders to active recipients of God's work of revelation--are constantly at risk of being buried as "mummies of prose," as George MacDonald puts it. We become so familiar with the language of Scripture that Jesus' parables no longer work on us in this revelatory and transforming way. George MacDonald, the Victorian poet and theologian, observed this very process at work in Victorian society. It was a culture saturated with Christian jargon but often devoid of a profound understanding of the gospel for its own time and culture. The language of Scripture no longer penetrated people's hearts, imaginations, and attitudes; it no longer transformed people's lives. MacDonald, called to be a pastor, turned to story and more specifically the "parabolic" as a means of spiritual awakening. He created fictive worlds in which the language of Jesus would find a new home and regain its revelatory power for his particular Victorian audience.
