Book excerpt: So you say that you're a Christian. But what happens when things don't go according to plan? What happens when you pray and don't get the answer you want? Is your faith strong enough to pull you through, or will you falter, questioning your beliefs and the God you claim to trust? It is estimated that 90 percent of Christians backslide, giving into their sinful nature and allowing the devil to regain control. As a result, many of them end up worse than they were before they came to know Christ. Don't Look Back! The Harmful Consequences of Backsliding explores the dangers of turning your back on God. Author Vanessa Grossett tells the story of Esther, a pastor, successful businesswoman, and faithful Christian. But when God commands her to wait on an answer to prayer, Esther's patience runs out, leading her down a path of unrepentance and destruction. Through this illustration and other biblically-based teaching, readers will learn: bull; How a Christian can spot the signs of backsliding bull; Why a Christian might backslide bull; How God deals with backsliding

Download or read book Documenting the Documentary written by Barry Keith Grant and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally released in 1998, Documenting the Documentary responded to a scholarly landscape in which documentary film was largely understudied and undervalued aesthetically, and analyzed instead through issues of ethics, politics, and film technology. Editors Barry Keith Grant and Jeannette Sloniowski addressed this gap by presenting a useful survey of the artistic and persuasive aspects of documentary film from a range of critical viewpoints. This new edition of Documenting the Documentary adds five new essays on more recent films in addition to the text of the first edition. Thirty-one film and media scholars, many of them among the most important voices in the area of documentary film, cover the significant developments in the history of documentary filmmaking from Nanook of the North (1922), the first commercially released documentary feature, to contemporary independent film and video productions like Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man (2005) and the controversial Borat (2006). The works discussed also include representative examples of many important national and stylistic movements and various production contexts, from mainstream to avant-garde. In all, this volume offers a series of rich and revealing analyses of those "regimes of truth" that still fascinate filmgoers as much today as they did at the very beginnings of film history. As documentary film and visual media become increasingly important ways for audiences to process news and information, Documenting the Documentary continues to be a vital resource to understanding the genre. Students and teachers of film studies and fans of documentary film will appreciate this expanded classic volume.

Download or read book D.A. Pennebaker written by Keith Beattie and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first book-length study of the extensive career and prolific works of D.A. Pennebaker, one of the pioneers of direct cinema, a documentary form that emphasizes observation and a straightforward portrayal of events. With a career spanning decades, Pennebaker's many projects have included avant-garde experiments (Daybreak Express), ground-breaking television documentaries (Primary), celebrity films (Dont Look Back), concert films (Monterey Pop), and innovative fusions of documentary and fiction (Maidstone). Exploring the concept of "performing the real," Keith Beattie interprets Pennebaker's films as performances in which the act of filming is in itself a performative transgression of the norms of purely observational documentary. He examines the ways in which Pennebaker's presentation of unscripted everyday performances is informed by connections between documentary filmmaking and other experimental movements such as the New American Cinema. Through his collaborations with such various artists as Richard Leacock, Shirley Clarke, Norman Mailer, and Jean-Luc Godard, Pennebaker has continually reworked and redefined the forms of documentary filmmaking. This book also includes a recent interview with the director and a full filmography.

They meet Ricardo, an Argentine graduate of Iowa State. Ricardo and James put Lammy on a plane to resume her pre-medical courses at the University of Kansas, and together they sail to the Canary Islands. James takes pity on a teenage dance hall orphan and spirits her away from her intended sponsors. Martina learns English and many of James American ideals as they cross the Atlantic back to his home on Paradine Island. He finds her to be intelligent and falls in love with her. His business prospers. They have two boys. On a sailing holiday they are attacked by pirates. James is killed. Tina escapes with her boys and carries on the business. With the assistance of Lammy, two clever biochemists, a British attorney, and Andrew, a quarter-breed Arapaho cowboy, the company becomes an international giant with headquarters in St.Louis. Andrew, Tina's second husband, and two of their little girls are killed in the bombing of the company's properties by Mid-eastern terrorists who are encouraged by liberal political organizations. After reestablishing the company headquarters in England, Tina takes her two boys on a fishing trip into the Scottish highlands. They meet a recluse Scottish earl. The boys initiate a romance between the earl and their mother. Marrying the earl, Tina takes him for a honeymoon sail on the C.M.Paradine. They and others have a myriad of experiences in the Caribbean chasing a thief who intended to sell to terrorists the company's irreplaceable supply of a lethal material he had stolen.

Download or read book 21st-Century Dylan written by Laurence Estanove and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Dylan has constantly reinvented the persona known as “Bob Dylan,” renewing the performance possibilities inherent in his songs, from acoustic folk, to electric rock and a late, hybrid style which even hints at so-called world music and Latin American tones. Then in 2016, his achievements outside of performance – as a songwriter – were acknowledged when he was awarded the Nobel Literature Prize. Dylan has never ceased to broaden the range of his creative identity, taking in painting, film, acting and prose writing, as well as advertising and even own-brand commercial production. The book highlights how Dylan has brought his persona(e) to different art forms and cultural arenas, and how they in turn have also created these personae. This volume consists of multidisciplinary essays written by cultural historians, musicologists, literary academics and film experts, including contributions by critics Christopher Ricks and Nina Goss. Together, the essays reveal Dylan's continuing artistic development and self-fashioning, as well as the making of a certain legitimized Dylan through critical and public recognition in the new millennium.
