This series is sure to be a hit with girls who love E.D. Baker and other authors who offer a big dose of humor and adventure with their princess fix. Rules for the Ballet of the Flowers: 1. The invitations must be perfect. 2. You must pick a beautiful flower. 3. Your dance must be graceful. At Tall Towers Princess Academy, the Ballet of the Flowers is a very special performance. But Grace just can’t seem to get it right. First, she ruins the invitations when she falls off her unicorn and into the mud. Then she picks a flower called dragon’s heart . . . but it smells more like dragon poo! And graceful? Well, that’s just not Princess Grace. She has much more important things on her mind—like whether a real dragon is living near her school! But will Grace’s secret new friend mess up the ballet performance?

Summary Book Review The Tail of the Dragon :

Download or read book The Tail of the Dragon written by Marcia B. Siegel and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Tail of the Dragon, Marcia B. Siegel and Nathaniel Tileston track the evolution of new dance in New York during the rich and crucial transitional period from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. Siegel, one of America's most important dance critics, and Tileston, an accomplished dance photographer, focus on the choreographers who were propelled into rebellion against conventional modern dance by the Judson Dance Theater and other countercultural movements born of the 1960s. This collection of Siegel's writing, compiled from reviews in Soho Weekly News and New York Magazine, as well as from longer essays and notebook pieces, forms an insightful commentary--occasionally wry, always perceptive—on the absorption of a radical art form by the mainstream. From minimalism, improvisation, street dancing, body awareness, and “poor theater” experimental strategies, these young rebels identified and adopted personal styles of movement and dancemaking; from that, they turned gradually to tamer, more accessible work, marked by virtuosic dancing, proscenium-ready repertoires, and touring companies. Included in this story are the principal players in the “postmodernist” dance movement—Merce Cunningham, Twyla Tharp, Trisha Brown, David Gordon—now well known internationally as leaders of dance in the 1990s. Siegel also looks at artists who worked steadily but less visibly, influential ones who drifted out of dance, and unknowns who have gained prominence. The dances described here are formal and outlandish, scruffy and beautiful, endearingly fallible and icily perfect. In rightfully celebrating the importance of dances long forgotten, The Tail of the Dragon produces a vibrant portrait of a generation of dance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VAUGH (Russian Dragon Heat 2) is the second book in the Amazon #1 Russian Dragon Heat paranormal series. At only two hundred years old, Vaugh is the youngest of the seven Romanov dragon-shifter brothers. He almost died three months ago when he was unexpectedly attacked by a dragon hunter. Having previously been the most laid-back of the Romanov brothers the attack has changed him. He’s no longer the easy-going charmer he used to be but has become introspective and taciturn. It’s this newfound impatience which makes Vaughn reluctant to travel to London to act as bodyguard to one of Russia’s principal ballet dancers. He’ll go, of course, because none of his brothers are available to do so, but that doesn’t mean he has to like babysitting Anastasia Chenkova. Until he meets her and realizes she’s his fated mate. Anastasia had never set foot outside of Russia before embarking on this world tour three months ago with The Turov Ballet Company. It isn’t anything like she’d thought it would be. Their stays in different cities around the world are brief, and with the demands of rehearsals and performances there isn’t any time for her to visit some of the wonders of those cities she had previously only seen in photographs but had long dreamed of visiting. Worse, she has acquired a stalker, one who leaves gifts in her dressing room and hotel suite. How or when he manages to gain access, to the theatre or her hotel room, is a mystery. But the cards accompanying the flowers are becoming more and more demanding of her attention. The company director is concerned enough by them that he no longer considers their own security to be enough and has called in someone from outside. The blond-haired Vaughn Romanov is six and a half feet tall and ruggedly handsome, and in spite of his gruff nature, Anastasia find herself attracted to his good looks and all those defined muscles. It’s an attraction Vaughn doesn’t seem able to resist either. But Anastasia senses Vaughn is hiding something, she just has no idea it’s a secret that will change her previous perspective of the world and challenge every one of her dreams for the future.

But with his foul mouth comes a heart of gold, and he's going to need it to get through the last weekend of summer 1984. Everyone up and down St. Patrick Street, Henry's claustrophobic Irish-Catholic block in Philadelphia -- with its seventy-eight row homes, seventy-eight skinny mile-high lawns, seventy-eight statues of saints, and seventy-eight Mondale-Ferraro signs -- knows that the Toohey family is falling apart. Henry's mailman father is having an affair with a neighbor lady right under his mother's nose. His big brother has been a drunken mess since his girlfriend died. And his little sister is counting on him to keep her laughing through it all. But Henry has a plan to pull the family back together: He'll propose to his chain-smoking fourteen-year-old girlfriend, Grace McClain, at a neighborhood wedding. To prepare, he and his ragtag group of friends pinball around the streets, making elaborate plans for his proposal, riding bikes, rating breasts, bothering the local merchants, talking trash about Mike Schmidt and Bob Seger, and kissing behind the seafood-store dumpster. Gritty, giddy, and bursting with Henry's boundless energy, Green Grass Grace is a heart-thumping rocket ride back to adolescence that is riotously funny and tragic at the same time.

Download or read book Don't Act, Just Dance written by Catherine Gunther Kodat and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point in their career, nearly all the dancers who worked with George Balanchine were told “don’t act, dear; just dance.” The dancers understood this as a warning against melodramatic over-interpretation and an assurance that they had all the tools they needed to do justice to the steps—but its implication that to dance is already to act in a manner both complete and sufficient resonates beyond stage and studio. Drawing on fresh archival material, Don’t Act, Just Dance places dance at the center of the story of the relationship between Cold War art and politics. Catherine Gunther Kodat takes Balanchine’s catch phrase as an invitation to explore the politics of Cold War culture—in particular, to examine the assumptions underlying the role of “apolitical” modernism in U.S. cultural diplomacy. Through close, theoretically informed readings of selected important works—Marianne Moore’s “Combat Cultural,” dances by George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, and Yuri Grigorovich, Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, and John Adams’s Nixon in China—Kodat questions several commonly-held beliefs about the purpose and meaning of modernist cultural productions during the Cold War. Rather than read the dance through a received understanding of Cold War culture, Don’t Act, Just Dance reads Cold War culture through the dance, and in doing so establishes a new understanding of the politics of modernism in the arts of the period.
