Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Courtney Moses was always about basketball, from an early age playing AAU ball, up and through grade school. In the 7th grade, the high school coaches saw a girl with skills and moves that far out did other girls her own age. What would possess a little girl from Sweetser, Indiana to dream about one day being Indiana Miss. Basketball. Could it be that she was destined to become the greatest player in all of Oak Hill basketball history? Or was all this just chance? Being at the right place at the right time. Courtney will tell you she knew from an early age she was going to be someone special with the basketball. But as fate would have it, God had given her a gift to play, and become one of the best, on and off the court. Now the only question was, will she do what it takes to become the best, or will she just do what is needed? Her story is an inspiration to all, but her story is to all those young girls who were told they can't, because they are too small, or too short, or because they are a girl. Her answer is a simple one, yes you can.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A BC classic—over 100,000 copies in print! Joe Garner's father, Oland, was the oldest of four brothers who were run out of South Carolina in 1903 by the Ku Klux Klan. Along with his bride, Lona, Oland headed west to San Francisco, then north to Victoria, BC. He found employment with Emily Carr's father. Ten years later he helped Emily build her house in Victoria. Garner recalls a hilarious childhood night spent sleeping between the artist's two shaggy sheepdogs. In this fascinating memoir, Joe Garner takes us from the family's move to Salt Spring Island to his adventures as a hunter and trapper to his adult exploits as an entrepreneur and innovator in several of the west coast's burgeoning industries. Garner recalls encounters with a cougar, journeys by floatplane to the remote reaches of the Queen Charlotte Islands and the lakes of the Chilcotin, and a poker game in which the stakes included logging camps and aircraft.

Book excerpt: Nephew to Sitting Bull, chief of the Sioux, Pte San Hunka (White Bull) was a famous warrior in his own right. He had been on the warpath against whites and other Indians for more than a decade when he fought the greatest battle of his life. On the afternoon of June 25, 1876, five troops of the U. S. Seventh Cavalry under the command of George Armstrong Custer rode into the valley of the Little Big Horn River, confidently expecting to rout the Indian encampments there. Instead, the cavalry met the gathered strength of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors, who did not run as expected but turned the battle toward the soldiers. White Bull charged again and again, fighting until the last soldier was dead. The battle was Custer's Last Stand, and White Bull was later referred to as the warrior who killed Custer. In 1932 White Bull related his life story to Stanley Vestal, who corroborated the details, from other sources and prepared this biography. "All that I told him is straight and true," said White Bull. His story is a matchless account of the life of an Indian warrior.

A specialist in American music, history of keyboard music, and the Baroque organ, Professor Clark for thirty-eight years?virtually his entire career?was professor of musicology, and later emeritus professor, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Book excerpt: From live productions of the 1950s like Requiem for a Heavyweight to big budget mini-series like Band of Brothers, long-form television programs have been helmed by some of the most creative and accomplished names in directing. Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors brings attention to the directors of these productions, citing every director of stand alone long-form television programs: made for TV movies, movie-length pilots, mini-series, and feature-length anthology programs, as well as drama, comedy, and musical specials of more than 60 minutes. Each of the nearly 2,000 entries provides a brief career sketch of the director, his or her notable works, awards, and a filmography. Many entries also provide brief discussions of key shows, movies, and other productions. Appendixes include Emmy Awards, DGA Awards, and other accolades, as well as a list of anthology programs. A much-needed reference that celebrates these often-neglected artists, Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of the medium.
