Book excerpt: Investigating Identities: Questions of Identity in Contemporary International Crime Fiction is one of the relatively few books to date which adopts a comparative approach to the study of the genre. This collection of twenty essays by international scholars, examining crime fiction production from over a dozen countries, confirms that a comparative approach can both shed light on processes of adaptation and appropriation of the genre within specific national, regional or local contexts, and also uncover similarities between the works of authors from very different areas. Contributors explore discourse concerning national and historical memory, language, race, ethnicity, culture and gender, and examine how identity is affirmed and challenged in the crime genre today. They reveal a growing tendency towards hybridization and postmodern experimentation, and increasing engagement with philosophical enquiry into the epistemological dimensions of investigation. Throughout, the notion of stable identities is subject to scrutiny. While each essay in itself is a valuable addition to existing criticism on the genre, all the chapters mutually inform and complement each other in fascinating and often unexpected ways. This volume makes an important contribution to the growing field of crime fiction studies and to ongoing debates on questions of identity. It will therefore be of special interest to students and scholars of the crime genre, identity studies and comparative literature. It will also appeal to all who enjoy reading contemporary crime fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the lived experience of cultural entrepreneurship examining the challenges associated with cultural labour including the insecurities of managing precarious working conditions. Drawing on interviews conducted with cultural workers, Cultural Entrepreneurship focuses on how individuals articulate their experience of entrepreneurship in the cultural and creative industries. Noting the importance of place, the local cultural milieu is examined as a means of situating entrepreneurial practices through cultural and enterprise policies, local networks, and significant relationships. Within this framework, the cultural entrepreneurs’ stories reveal means of subverting or re-interpreting identities and the possibility for ‘rethinking cultural entrepreneurship.’ Aimed at researchers, academics and students investigating cultural entrepreneurship, cultural policy and cultural labour, Cultural Entrepreneurship will additionally be of value to creative industry consultants, cultural policymakers, and those setting up creative enterprises. Researchers from fields such as geography, investigating different aspects of the cultural industries in relation to cultural policy and place, will also find this book to be a useful contribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In British society, we celebrate diversity and champion equality across many areas, such as race and religion. However, where do British accents stand? Do notions such as 'common' or 'posh' still exist regarding certain accents, to the extent that people are deemed fit, or not, for certain professions, despite their qualifications? Accent and Teacher Identity in Britain explores these questions and Alex Baratta's research shows that those with accents regional to the North and Midlands are most likely to be told by mentors and senior staff to essentially sound less regional, whereas those from the Home Counties are less likely to be given instructions to change their accent at all. Baratta investigates the notion of linguistic power, in terms of which accents appear to be favoured within the context of teacher training and from the perspective of teachers who feel they lack power in the construction of their linguistic teacher identity. He also questions modifying one's accent to meet someone else's standard for what is 'linguistically appropriate', in terms of how such a modified accent impact on personal identity. Is accent modification regarded by the individual neutrally or is it seen as 'selling out'?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, western European societies are at the same time facing the aftermath of massive immigration movements and the challenges of new globalization waves. Education is at the heart of this twofold experience. On the one hand, it is confronted with the demand of developing a canon for national identity construction. On the other hand, it is held responsible for the pupils' emancipation in a globalizing society. As a consequence teachers and pupils are challenged to deal with identity issues in their everyday classroom realities. In politics, the media, and the educational field much has been said and done regarding immigrant minority pupils' identities and their socio-cultural and linguistic integration. Still, little is known about how identities are actually constructed and developed in the discourses of those who make up the primary school classroom. This book reports on two ethnographic case studies carried out in multicultural classrooms in a Dutch and Flemish primary school. It portrays the discourses and the interactions class teachers and their twelve-year-old pupils are engaged in on a daily basis. In-depth analyses are presented of the institutional discourses which the classrooms are part of and of the teachers' and pupils' discourses and their mutual relationships. In both classrooms the analysis shows that pupils' identities are constructed by the institutions and their teachers on the basis of their language behaviour and their 'presupposed' belonging to a homogeneous cultural and/or religious group. The analysis at the same time makes clear that teachers have started questioning their understanding of immigrant minority pupils' identities. It further shows that the pupils under investigation are by no means passive objects of identity ascription. Rather, they appear as active and capable multilingual and multicultural stockbrokers, ready and willing to invest in the linguistic and cultural currency that ensures the highest return on investment.
