Download or read book Critical Mineral Resources of the United States written by K. J. Schulz and published by Geological Survey. This book was released on 2017 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the importance and dependence of specific mineral commodities increase, so does concern about their supply. The United States is currently 100 percent reliant on foreign sources for 20 mineral commodities and imports the majority of its supply of more than 50 mineral commodities. Mineral commodities that have important uses and face potential supply disruption are critical to American economic and national security. However, a mineral commodity's importance and the nature of its supply chain can change with time; a mineral commodity that may not have been considered critical 25 years ago may be critical today, and one considered critical today may not be so in the future. The U.S. Geological Survey has produced this volume to describe a select group of mineral commodities currently critical to our economy and security. For each mineral commodity covered, the authors provide a comprehensive look at (1) the commodity's use; (2) the geology and global distribution of the mineral deposit types that account for the present and possible future supply of the commodity; (3) the current status of production, reserves, and resources in the United States and globally; and (4) environmental considerations related to the commodity's production from different types of mineral deposits. The volume describes U.S. critical mineral resources in a global context, for no country can be self-sufficient for all its mineral commodity needs, and the United States will always rely on global mineral commodity supply chains. This volume provides the scientific understanding of critical mineral resources required for informed decisionmaking by those responsible for ensuring that the United States has a secure and sustainable supply of mineral commodities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gems have been used in the manufacture of jewellery and as ornaments since antiquity. Considering gems, recent statistics have shown that about 15 billion Euros are annually at stake. Nowadays, gemmology, i.e., the study of gem materials, is one of the most expanding fields in the earth sciences, positioned between academia and industry. As an applied science, in gemmology, the instruments used should be non- or microdestructive, and their cost should be reasonable both in terms of equipment and time consumption. Gemmology can also be used contribute to the development of pure science and in some cases, destructive techniques may have to be used. Taking into account the fact that gems are albeit rarely available for scientific research, this compilation of 20 articles by around 100 researchers from over 30 different institutions situated in 20 countries from around the globe, presented in the Special Issue entitled “Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Gems”, offers very good examples on the application of various methods for their study which will hopefully contribute to our better understanding of gem formation in general and will enhance scientific debates attracting more scientists from various disciplines to get involved in this field.

Book excerpt: Rome is proud to host the eighth edition of the European Conference on Mineralogy and Spectroscopy (ECMS 2015). This is a welcome back, after the starting point of this conference cycle in Rome (1988) and following editions held in Berlin (1995), Kiev (1996), Paris (2001), Vienna (2004), Stockholm (2007) and Potsdam (2011). The Rome 2015 conference will hopefully reflect the philosophy of previous conferences and provide a common forum to present new ideas, concepts and results related to mineral spectroscopy. It will also offer an opportunity for students and young scientists to meet and interact with established, well-known scientists. The conference deals with mineralogy, spectroscopy and related fields of science, bringing together both theoretically and experimentally oriented scientists and providing an opportunity to share ideas and learn from one another. The ECMS 2015 is housed in the headquarters of the National Research Council, and consists of three days of oral presentations and two days of poster sessions. Keynote lectures will be presented by Frank C. Hawthorne, Laurence Galoisy, Robert D. Shannon, Giancarlo Della Ventura, Bjorn Winkler and Catherine McCammon. This volume is the joint effort of all conference participants largely coming from Europe, but also from America, Asia and Australia. It contains 100 contributions, many of which present experimental results and applications based on new or well-established analytical techniques, while others highlight theoretical and computational approaches to our better understanding of short-range and long-range structures of minerals and materials. We are very grateful for the constant support of Francesco Di Benedetto (publicity chair), Sabrina Nazzareni (treasurer) and our scientific advisory board: Danilo Bersani, Giuseppe Cruciani, Michele Dondi, Ulf Hålenius, Monika Koch-Müller, Roberta Oberti, Henrik Skogby and Sergio Speziale. Without the generous sponsoring from the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia (SIMP), Italian National Research Council (CNR) and Periodico di Mineralogia and the support of Sapienza Università di Roma, it would have been very difficult to organize this meeting and this volume. We also appreciate the sponsorship and scholarship grant from the European Mineralogical Union (EMU) and the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), and contributions from private companies (Bruker, Geologica, Gemmoraman, Masterstones, PANalytical). Thanking all participants for coming in the Eternal City, we wish you all a stimulating, informative and enjoyable conference and offer a sincere welcome to the ECMS 2015. Giovanni B. Andreozzi and Ferdinando Bosi Co-chairmen On behalf of the Organizing Committee

Download or read book Mineral Property Evaluation written by Richard L. Bullock and published by Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Everything” sums up what must be considered for a properly documented property evaluation. Less than 30% of the projects that are developed in the minerals industry yield the return on investment that was projected from the project feasibility studies. The tools described in this handbook will greatly improve the probability of meeting your projections and minimizing project execution capital cost blowout that has become so prevalent in this industry in recent years. Mineral Property Evaluation provides guidelines to follow in performing mineral property feasibility and evaluation studies and due diligence, and in preparing proper documents for bankable presentations. It highlights the need for a consistent, systematic methodology in performing evaluation and feasibility work. The objective of a feasibility and evaluation study should be to assess the value of the undeveloped or developed mineral property and to convey these findings to the company that is considering applying technical and physical changes to bring the property into production of a mineral product. The analysis needs to determine the net present worth returned to the company for investing in these changes and to reach that decision point as early as possible and with the least amount of money spent on the evaluation study. All resources are not reserves, nor are all minerals an ore. The successful conclusion of any property evaluation depends on the development, work, and conclusions of the project team. The handbook has a diverse audience: • Professionals in the minerals industry that perform mineral property evaluations. • Companies that have mineral properties and perform mineral property feasibility studies and evaluations or are buying properties based on property evaluation. • Financial institutions, both domestic and overseas, that finance or raise capital for the minerals industry. • Consulting firms and architectural and engineering contractors that utilize mineral property feasibility studies and need standards to follow. • And probably the most important, the mining and geological engineering students and geology and economic geology students that need to learn the standards that they should follow throughout their careers.

This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph is concerned with results of studies of petrology of mafic-ultramafic massifs as part of the East Sakhalin ophiolite association. It generalizes and interprets a large body of data (mainly original data) on geology, petrography, petrochemistry, and geochemistry of rocks; mineralogy and geochemistry of rock-forming and accessory minerals; chromite and platinum contents, and isotopic age of zircons from rocks of the typical mafic-ultramafic massifs of the East Sakhalin ophiolite association: Berezovka, Shel’ting, Komsomol’sk, and South Schmidt. Gabbroids from the Berezovka massif contain ultramafic xenoliths. Ultramafic rocks are locally cut by gabbroid and pyroxenite veins. Three spatially close but genetically autonomous bodies are distinguished in the structure of the massifs under study: protrusion of upper-mantle restitic ultramafic rocks (harzburgites, lherzolites, and dunites); intrusion of orthomagmatic gabbroids (gabbronorites, gabbro, and norites) that cuts it; and contact-reaction zone, located along the boundaries between gabbroid intrusion and ultramafic protrusion, which consists of hybrid ultramafic rocks (wehrlites, websterites, clinopyroxenites, and their olivine- and plagioclase-containing varieties) and hybrid gabbroids (melano- and mesocratic olivine gabbronorites and gabbro as well as troctolites). The hybrid ultramafic rocks and gabbroids are the product of interaction between mafic melts and restitic ultramafic rocks. Taking into account the later formation of the gabbroid intrusions compared to the ultramafic protrusions, the massifs in question are determined as polygenic. The idea of their polygenic formation is supported by data on the isotopic age of zircons from the Berezovka massif rocks. In this monograph the author develops his earlier proposed concept of polygenic formation of mafic–ultramafic massifs belonging to ophiolite associations. The book addresses a wide circle of petrologists and practicing geologists as well as senior-year students and postgraduates studying problems of mafic-ultramafic magmatism.

Book excerpt: This book furnishes detailed information about Turkey's existing mineral resources, besides providing concepts and ideas which may help the search for potential mineral resources in the future. It is a first book in the English-language international literature on mineral resources of Turkey and it is aimed at economic geologists, mining engineers, and mining investors, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. This work focuses mainly on a range of mineral systems and related geological features throughout Turkey. Taking into account the lack of international literature on these resources, a considerable portion of the book explains the geological context of the region and the settings in which the mineral resources occur. The genetic characteristics of these mineral resources are emphasized and important information is also presented on their economic aspects. All chapter contributions are prepared by researchers and professional geologists.
