Book excerpt: This book is a lot about "coming of age'. I wanted to share things I experienced back then with you. It will be of a lot of interest to those who have ever had a loved one in a nursing facility. I really hope you find it an enjoyable read. The voices, laughter and stories shared with me during my time working with the elderly still resonates in my head all these years later. I want to share them in this book. There are many, many more wonderful things to tell about those days. This book only scratches the surface.

Download or read book Labor of Love written by Heather Jacobson and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the practice of surrogacy has existed for millennia, new fertility technologies have allowed women to act as gestational surrogates, carrying children that are not genetically their own. While some women volunteer to act as gestational surrogates for friends or family members, others get paid for performing this service. The first ethnographic study of gestational surrogacy in the United States, Labor of Love examines the conflicted attitudes that emerge when the ostensibly priceless act of bringing a child into the world becomes a paid occupation. Heather Jacobson interviews not only surrogate mothers, but also their family members, the intended parents who employ surrogates, and the various professionals who work to facilitate the process. Seeking to understand how gestational surrogates perceive their vocation, she discovers that many regard surrogacy as a calling, but are reluctant to describe it as a job. In the process, Jacobson dissects the complex set of social attitudes underlying this resistance toward conceiving of pregnancy as a form of employment. Through her extensive field research, Jacobson gives readers a firsthand look at the many challenges faced by gestational surrogates, who deal with complicated medical procedures, delicate work-family balances, and tricky social dynamics. Yet Labor of Love also demonstrates the extent to which advances in reproductive technology are affecting all Americans, changing how we think about maternity, family, and the labor involved in giving birth. These are the recipes that I used to cook for my parents when I took care of them in our home in Pawleys Island, SC the last 2 and 4 years of their lives, respectively. I tried to cook a variety of different cuisines and as a result amassed a sizable list of recipes. This book represents what I consider their favorites. My parents loved Pawleys Island so I included some pictures that represent the Pawleys Island that they loved and in doing so I believe add to your pleasure of leafing through the book and making it a coffee table piece.

Book excerpt: A LABOR OF LOVE; Weaving Your Own Virgin Birth on the Loom of Life continues the metaphysical mediation of life, once again featuring Christo Sahbays, the itinerant metaphysician who infills with heart wisdom, igniting inspiration in those who have ears and want now to hear, and eyes who want now to see. This second entry in the author's new MY SPIRITUAL AWARENESS SERIES is a heartfelt extension of its predecessor that takes the reader to the divine Essence each is in order to encourage letting go of, or forgiving, those childhood images that are the warp upon which our history has been woven time and again. When the freedom to just be what we always have been, are, and always will be quickens our Spirit, we come at last to embrace our own divinity, which then leads us to embrace the divinity all of life so beautifully just Is. This second offering in the MY SPIRITUAL AWARENESS SERIES stems from the first--. A third in the series, KEYS TO THE DOOR OF TRUTH; Metaphysical Musings of a Born-Yet-Again, leads to future writings that will deal with such topics as the metaphysical meaning of Jesus and his disciples, the Sermon on the Mount, some of the various "newfound" Gospels, and those portions of the remaining three Gospels that do not replicate the content of the Gospel of John--all placed in a practical perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Prisons and Prayer; Or, a Labor of Love" by Elizabeth Ryder Wheaton is a tale of evangelistic work in prisons. Nearly all of its inhabitants are prisoners surrounded by walls of sin and darkness. Many are bound down by the curse of rum, others by the besetting sins of lust, unholy temper, envy, revenge, malice, hatred, jealousy, prejudice, pride, covetousness, or selfishness resulting from a carnal mind. Out of the vast multitudes that are led captive by the devil at his will, a few that have violated human law have been sentenced to various prisons and reformatories. This book has much to say about the men and women behind prison walls. It records the sad story of many prisoners in a way that very few can read without being moved to tears and that will awaken sympathy in the hardest hearts.

Download or read book Why So Slow? written by Virginia Valian and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999-01-07 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Valian uses concepts and data from psychology, sociology, economics, and biology to explain the disparity in the professional advancement of men and women. Why do so few women occupy positions of power and prestige? Virginia Valian uses concepts and data from psychology, sociology, economics, and biology to explain the disparity in the professional advancement of men and women. According to Valian, men and women alike have implicit hypotheses about gender differences—gender schemas—that create small sex differences in characteristics, behaviors, perceptions, and evaluations of men and women. Those small imbalances accumulate to advantage men and disadvantage women. The most important consequence of gender schemas for professional life is that men tend to be overrated and women underrated. Valian's goal is to make the invisible factors that retard women's progress visible, so that fair treatment of men and women will be possible. The book makes its case with experimental and observational data from laboratory and field studies of children and adults, and with statistical documentation on men and women in the professions. The many anecdotal examples throughout provide a lively counterpoint.

Download or read book Recovering the Piedmont Past written by Timothy P. Grady and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of South Carolina’s lowcountry has been well documented by historians, but the upcountry—the region of the state north and west of Columbia and the geologic fall line—has only recently begun to receive extensive scholarly attention. The essays in this collection provide a window into the social and cultural life of the upstate during the nineteenth century. The contributors explore topics ranging from the history of education in the region to the pugnacity of the Scots-Irish, from post–Civil War occupation by Union troops to upcountry tourism, from the Freedman’s Bureau’s efforts to educate African Americans to the complex dynamics of lynch mobs in the late nineteenth century. Recovering the Piedmont Past illustrates larger trends of social transformation occurring in the region at a time that shaped religion, education, race relations and the economy well into the twentieth century. The essays add depth and complexity to our understanding of nineteenth century southern history and challenge accepted narratives about a homogeneous South. Ultimately each of the eight essays explores little known facets of the history of upcountry South Carolina in the nineteenth century. The collection includes a foreword by Orville Vernon Burton, professor of history and director of the Cyberinstitute at Clemson University.
