Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents a sort of counter-history or counter-genealogy of the globalization of French thought from the point of view of scholars working in the UK. While the dominating discourse would attribute the US as the source of that globalization, particularly through the 1966 conference on the Languages of Criticism and the Sciences of Man at Johns Hopkins University, this volume of essays serves as a reminder that the UK has also been a principal motor of that globalization. The essays take into account how French thought and literary theory have institutionally taken shape in the UK from the 70s to today, highlight aspects of French thought that have been of particular pertinence or importance for scholars there, and outline how researchers in the UK today are bringing French thought further in terms of teaching and research in this twenty-first century. In short, this volume traces how the country has been behind the reception and development of French thought in Anglophone worlds from the late 70s to the present.

Book excerpt: Outlining the controversies that have surrounded the academic discipline of English Literature since its institutionalization in the late nineteenth century, this important book draws on a range of archival sources. It addresses issues that are central to the identity of academic English - how the subject came into existence, and what makes it a specialist discipline of knowledge - in a manner that illuminates many of the crises that have affected the development of modern English studies. Atherton also addresses contemporary arguments about the teaching of literary criticism, including an examination of the reforms to A-Level literature.

Or that the first mention of the motor car in literature may have been in 1791 in James Boswell's Life of Johnson? Or that it was not unknown in the nineteenth century for book reviews to be 30,000 words long? These are just a few of the fascinating facts to be found in this absorbing history of literary criticism. From the Ancient Greek period to the present day, we learn about critics' lives, the times in which they lived and how the same problems of interpretation and valuation persist through the ages. In this lively and engaging book, Gary Day questions whether the 'theory wars' of recent years have lost sight of the actual literature, and makes surprising connections between criticism and a range of subjects, including the rise of money.General readers will appreciate this informative, intriguing and often provocative

Download or read book Literary Theory in Germany written by Margot E. Zutshi and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1981 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the genre theories of Emil Staiger (Grundbegriffe der Poetik) and Käte Hamburger (Die Logik der Dichtung), and the evaluation theories of Hans-Egon Hass and Walter Müller-Seidel, in the context of post-war literary theory in West Germany. The close analysis of these theories, representative of developments up to 1965, shows that they have fundamental characteristics in common which are absent from later work in this field. To a greater or lesser extent all four are ahistorical, normative, and indebted to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century ideas on aesthetics. Changes in literary theory since 1965 involve a complete break with the past: these include the substitution of a descriptive concept of literature for a normative and aesthetic one, the narrowing of the gap between theory and contemporary literature, and the demand that literary study should become a historical discipline with particular emphasis on the role of the reader.
