Book excerpt: 'Marx did not reject the idea of human nature. He was right not to do so.' That is the conclusion of this passionate and polemical new work by Norman Geras. In it, he places the sixth of Marx's These on Feuerbach under rigorous scrutiny. He argues that this ambiguous statement - widely cited as evidence that Marx broke with all concepts of human nature in 1845 - must be read in the context of Marx's work as a whole. His later writings are formed by an idea of a specifically human nature that fulfils both explanatory and normative functions. The belief that Marx's historical materialism entailed a denial of the conception of human nature is, Geras writes, 'an old fixation, which the Althusserian influence in this matter has fed upon...Because this fixation still exists and is misguided, it is still necessary to challenge it.' One hundred years after Marx's death, this timely essay - combing the strengths of analytical philosophy and classical Marxism - rediscovers a central part of his heritage.

Book excerpt: This collection of papers, written over the last six years by Robert Caper, focuses on the importance of distinguishing self from object in psychological development. Robert Caper demonstrates the importance this psychological disentanglement plays in the therapeutic effect of psychoanalysis. In doing so he demonstrates what differentiates the practice of psychoanalysis from psychotherapy; while psychotherapy aims to ease the patient towards "good mental health" through careful suggestion; psychoanalysis allows the patient to discover him/herself, with the self wholly distinguished from other people and other objects.

Summary Book Review Marx, Marxism, and Human Nature :

Download or read book Marx, Marxism, and Human Nature written by Caleb Berkemeier and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings possess a stable human nature that has been formed over millions of years of evolutionary history. Through the mechanism of natural selection, phenotypic traits and behaviors have evolved for the sole purpose of ensuring the survival of the organism that carries genetic information. This means that there is interspecific, genetic continuity across evolutionary history. Two types of continuity that will be discussed are aggression and sexual dimorphism, both of which can be understood as stable aspects of human nature that influence how humans behave. The thesis then discusses the Marxist-humanist appropriation of the term "human nature" as a semantic mystification intended to reconcile Marx with the biological sciences. Marx is much less clear on human nature, and even in his early humanist writings, his conception of human nature is thoroughly social and incompatible with evolutionary theory. The Marxist-humanists attempt to find human nature in biological limitation and human needs, but these conceptions are far too meager to be considered a robust account of human nature. The thesis then discusses the anti-humanism of the Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser. In opposition to the Marxist-humanists, Althusser believes that the writings of Marx post-1845 are his definitive statement on human nature. Althusser argues that Marx established the science of historical materialism by removing humans from the center of the historical process and instead focusing on the non-human elements of the historical process itself. Althusser is concerned with the universal applicability of historical materialism, just as the Marxist-humanists are concerned with the universalism of human emancipation. The thesis argues that their universalism, although limited, is an accurate way of perceiving commonalities across the human species, but true universalism can only be understood when applied to human nature in the context of evolutionary history.

Download or read book Theories of Human Nature - Third Edition written by Peter Loptson and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2006-01-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the idea of human nature and the many understandings of it put forward by such diverse figures as Aristotle, Rousseau, Marx, Freud, Darwin, and E.O. Wilson. Each chapter looks at a different theory and offers a concise explanation, assessing the theory's plausibility without forcing it into a mould. Some chapters deal with the ideas of only one thinker, while others (such as the chapters on liberalism and feminism) present a variety of different positions. A clear distinction is made between theories of human nature and the political theories which so often follow from them. For the new edition, Loptson has addressed the new developments in the rapidly expanding genetic and paleontological record, as well as expanded the discussion of the Christian theory of human nature by incorporating the ideas of the Marx scholar and social theorist G.A. Cohen. The new edition has also been substantively revised and updated throughout.
