Book excerpt: This book offers a new methodological and theoretical approach to the highly sensitive and complicated issue of violence against women in contemporary Iran. Challenging the widespread notion that secularisation and modernisation are the keys to emancipating women, the author instead posits that domestic violence is deeply rooted in society and situated in the fundament of current discourses. Investigating how orthodox jurisprudence as mainstream discourse, together with social, legal and public norms, help to perpetuate the production and reproduction of physical, psychological, sexual and economical violence against women, the author presents and reflects upon narratives, experiences and the social realities accounting for domestic violence against women. Drawing on qualitative empirical research, she theorises that the notion of secularization and modernisation helping to overcome such violence is to some extent represented by Islamic feminism, secular feminism, and religious intellectualism, all of which are methodologically examined in the analysis. Challenging conventional wisdom regarding women’s place in Iran and in wider Islamic society, this book offers a new insight into violence against Muslim women and as such will be an important addition to the existing literature in the areas of gender studies, Middle Eastern and Islamic studies, and Iranian studies.

Book excerpt: This book presents a new approach to understanding contemporary personal life, taking account of how people build their lives through a bricolage of ‘tradition’ and ‘modern’. The authors examine how tradition is used and adapted, invented and re-invented; how meaning can leak from past to present; the ways in which people’s agencies differ as they make decisions; and the process of bricolage in making new arrangements. These themes are illustrated through a variety of case studies, ranging from personal life in the 1950s, young women and marriage, the rise of cohabitation, female name change, living apart together, and creating weddings. Centrally the authors emphasise the re-traditionalisation involved in de-traditionalisation and the connectedness involved in individualised processes of relationship change. Reinventing Couples will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including sociology, social work and social policy.

Book excerpt: 1785. When Lord Peregrine accepts a wager to win the favour of his unscrupulous ladylove, he does not expect to fall in love with the woman he promises to ruin. Nor does he question the reasons behind the wager. It’s enough to have proof that the supposedly virtuous Miss Celeste Rosington does not deserve her position as society’s darling. When beautiful, virtuous Celeste Rosington disguises herself to aid her future husband, she inadvertently finds herself in the arms of notorious libertine, Lord Peregrine. Bound to an arranged marriage with her cousin, Raphael, since childhood, Celeste is disconcerted by her attraction dashing Lord Peregrine as she works to reclaim an item Raphael insists is his. Despite her attempts at discretion, Celeste’s reputation is suddenly the talk of the town. Someone, she realises, wishes to see her ruined. But who? And why? As Celeste questions the bonds of loyalty she’s taken for granted her entire life, she must decide if dashing Lord Peregrine is friend or foe. Dare she take a chance on love when misplacing her allegiance could come at the cost of her life? *Wicked Wager was previously published by Harlequin Escape under the name Beverley Eikli. This exciting, fast-paced Georgian romance with mystery and intrigue has since been revised. Here's what the readers say: “Cloaked in mystery and dark agendas Wicked Wager…is a wonderful expedition into intrigue and romance! Nothing is as it seems in this book and as the story evolved clues and romance built.” ~ Jenerated Reviews. “The author knows how to weave a web full of mystery and suspense, and I had a great time relating to the heroine. Wicked Wager isn't the typical historical romance, it's very complex and intense.” ~ Kindle Reader “A great novel about a lord who is bored and likes playing games, especially when there are women involved. The game playing is fun and the romantic aspect …is great.” ~ Amazon Reader “A powerful page-turner with a compelling romance, a gripping 'edge of the seat' mystery and characters that held me spellbound.” ~ Amazon Reader "Full of mystery, intrigue, and romance. This book is set aside from all others. Totally immersible and hadn't realised I had finished it until I turned the last page. What a book!!"~ Kindle Reader

Book excerpt: As women, we compete for attention, validation, admiration, and the like. Today, technology makes it possible to connect with family and friends instantaneously. We have so many options. Gone are the days of a hand-written letter and rare are the phone conversations or times to really be authentic with a close friend. Technology makes it easy for women to portray an ideal life that competes with those whose lives they see represented on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and other social media. By going beneath the surface and discovering God’s true design for womanhood, women can feel empowered, energized, and free to remove the masks and confidently embrace a life of authenticity. While technologies such as social media and websites can improve our abilities and options to connect, they also mean there are just so many more channels we have to manage—relationships, perceptions, details, and to top it off, we have to be aware of how our communications will be read and interpreted on the receiving end. Even though women long for meaningful relationships and an authentic life story, they often find themselves exhausted from having to create and maintain a variety of masks to wear during the appropriate settings that prevent them from this. As with anything, when it is overused, technology can take away from truly deep one-on-one intimacy and interaction. Anything we come to rely on to substitute for personal relationships runs the risks of losing authenticity.

Download or read book Ultimate Deceit written by Piper Varsi and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultimate Deceit is a series of true accounts experienced by the author that takes the reader into a deeper mind-bending world of incredible occurrences. It presents factual events that involve interaction by EBEs (extra biological entities) with human beings—events that even today have been suppressed by world governments and just lately partially disclosed by the US Navy. Read about the author’s own experiences related to her own medical examinations, implants, and other experimentation conducted in her organs by other beings! Lately, the Pentagon, through the Defense Department, confirmed that photographs and videos by the military of unidentified aerial phenomena were indeed legitimate images of unexplained objects maneuvering in the skies and seas of our planet. While the author’s own experiences were with discoid-type craft, there are many other shapes mentioned in this book, like spheres, cylinders, triangles, and so on, all describing a dazzling array of face-to-face encounters, abductions, sightings, and landings. The author presents undeniable proof that shows carvings and drawings from ancient civilizations that existed thousands of years ago (and that perhaps were even more advanced than ours today) and which depict advanced technologies like flying aircraft, plus figures of humanoid beings, proof literally written in stone! After reading Ultimate Deceit and examining the evidence exposed in the book, readers may be shocked, especially when they reach conclusions and the acceptance of the fact that we are not alone in the universe—for example, considering the scientific Drake equation (ref. the SETI Institute), which is as follows: N = R * fp * ne * fl * fi * fc * L Where N = the number of broadcasting civilizations R = average rate of formation of suitable stars (stars/year) in the Milky Way galaxy fp = fraction of stars that form planets ne = average number of habitable planets per star fl = fraction of habitable planets (ne) where life emerges fi = fraction of habitable planets with life where intelligent evolves fc = fraction of planets with intelligent life capable of interstellar communication L = years a civilization remains detectable

This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In traditional China, upper-class literati were inevitably strongly influenced by Confucian doctrine and rarely touched upon such topics as love and women in their writings. It was not until the mid-Tang, a generation or two after the An Lushan rebellion, that literary circles began to engage in overt discussion of the issues of love and women, through the use of the newly emerging genres of zhiguai and chuanqi fiction. The debate was carried out with an unprecedented enthusiasm, since the topics were considered to be the key to understanding the crisis in Chinese civilization. This book examines the repertoire of chuanqi and zhiguai written during the Six Dynasties and Tang periods and analyzes the key themes, topics, and approaches found in these tales, which range from expressions of male fantasy, sympathy, fear, and anxiety, to philosophical debate on the place of the feminine in patriarchal Chinese society. Many of these stories reflect tensions between masculine and feminine aspects of civilization as seen, for example, in the conflict of male aspiration and female desire, as well as the ultimate longing for reconciliation of these divisions. These stories form a crucial chapter in the history of love in China and would provide much of the foundation for further explorations during the late imperial period, as seen in seminal works such as The Peony Pavilion and Dream of the Red Chamber.
