Book excerpt: In 2006, as the gossip columnist for The Times, Hugo Rifkind realised it would be much easier to do his job if he could make all the stories up. So he did. For years now, Rifkind's hilarious 'My Week' column has satirised anyone foolish or unfortunate enough to make headlines that week, entertaining politicos and casual readers alike. Each column acts as a fictional diary, parodying the musings of its target (and friends) for five days' worth of comic value. Oprah, Bieber, Berlusconi (the gift who keeps on giving), Cameron, Clarkson, Obama, Mother Miliband and a Pic'n'mix shovel are just a few of those on his eclectic list of ill-fated victims. After much badgering from loyal fans, Rifkind has finally hand-selected his best, funniest and most poignant, here presented with new introductions. None are spared in this comical compilation, and readers old and new will delight in the satirical skewering of some of our most famous (and infamous) figures.

Download or read book My Week with Marilyn written by Colin Clark and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine sneaking away to spend seven days with the most famous woman in the world. In 1956, fresh from Oxford University, twenty-three-year-old Colin Clark began work as a lowly assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl, the film that united Sir Laurence Olivier with Marilyn Monroe. The blonde bombshell and the legendary actor were ill suited from the start. Monroe, on honeymoon with her new husband, the celebrated playwright Arthur Miller, was insecure, often late, and heavily medicated on pills. Olivier, obsessively punctual, had no patience for Monroe and the production became chaotic. Clark recorded it all in two unforgettable diaries -- the first a charming fly-on-the- wall account of life as a gofer on the set; the other a heartfelt, intimate, and astonishing remembrance of the week Clark spent escorting Monroe around England, earning the trust and affection of one of the most desirable women in the world. Published together here for the first time, the books are the basis for the upcoming major motion picture My Week with Marilyn starring Michelle Williams, Judi Dench, and Kenneth Branagh. England was abuzz when Monroe arrived to shoot The Prince and the Showgirl. She hoped working with the legendary Olivier would give her acting further credibility, while he hoped the film would give his career a boost at the box office and some Hollywood glamour. But Monroe, feeling abandoned when Miller left the country for Paris, became difficult on the set. Clark was perceptive in his assessment of what seemed to be going wrong in Monroe's life: too many hangers-on, intense insecurity, and too many pills. Olivier, meanwhile, was impatient and condescending toward her. At a certain point, feeling isolated and overwhelmed, Monroe turned her attention to Clark, who gave her comfort and solace. Before long, she escaped the set and a remarkable true adventure took place. Monroe and Clark spent an innocent week together in the English countryside and Clark became her confidant and ally. And, like any man would be expected to, he fell a bit in love. Clark understood how best to handle Monroe and became Olivier's only hope of getting the film finished. Before long, young Colin was in over his head, and his heart may well have been broken by the world's biggest movie star. A beguiling memoir that reads like a fable, My Week with Marilyn is above all a love letter to one of our most enduring icons.

This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me" (Rev. 3:20). Wouldn't it be great if you could open the door, invite Jesus into your home, and ask Him when He's coming back? All the confusion about the events surrounding Christ's return would vanish as He explains the Scriptures to you. You would have your own "Emmaus Road journey." Like the apostles and first-century disciples, you could say that He opened the eyes of your understanding. That's exactly what this series does by unfolding in an easy-to-follow manner what God's Word shows us and what Jesus taught. Each of the three books focuses on three critical end-time revelations that open the door of our understanding surrounding the events of Christ's return. The New Testament apostles received these keys from Jesus Himself. Over the centuries, these revelations were lost or watered down, leaving us flustered and even fearful. That's not God's will. It's time to let the Word speak for itself with a message of comfort, hope, and victory. This second book in the Emmaus Road journey walks you through one of the most significant end-time prophecies in the Bible. You may be surprised to find that it is all about Christ's first and second comings, not the future Antichrist. Step by step, you'll see how this prophecy: • accurately predicted when Jesus would first appear as the Messiah almost five hundred years in advance, • foreshadowed the restful end to the need for sacrificial offerings through the death and resurrection of Jesus, • and most importantly, predicts what Christ will accomplish when He comes again.

Book excerpt: Vera; Or, The Nihilists was the first play written by Oscar Wilde. It was also the first to be performed and premiered in 1883 in New York. Set in Russia, the play tells the story of Vera Sabouroff, a barmaid in her father's tavern, who starts working with the Nihilists, a gang of terrorists who are trying to kill the Tsar. After becoming the group's top assassin, she falls in love with one of the other members. However, this member is hiding his true identity and when the truth comes out, Vera ends up facing a terrible dilemma. Based loosely on the life of Russian socialist activist Vera Zasulich, the play was not a success when it was first written and was never performed in London - closing after only one week. Critics were divided with some saying it was 'the noblest contribution to its literature the stage has received in many years' -and others saying the play was 'long-drawn dramatic rot'.

Book excerpt: Written with a searing honesty and published for the tenth anniversary of Amy Winehouse's death, My Amy is an evocative portrait of unbreakable lifelong friendship – and a devastating study into fame, addiction and self-sabotage. Only one person knows what really happened to Amy, other than Amy herself. He is Tyler James, Amy’s best friend from the age of thirteen. They met at stage school as two insecure outsiders, formed an instant connection and lived together from their late teenage years right up until the day she died, aged just twenty-seven. Tyler was there by her side through it all. From their carefree early years touring together to the creation of the multiple Grammy-winning Back To Black, which she wrote on their kitchen floor. From her volatile marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil through her escalating addictions, self-harm and eating disorders as the toxic nature of fame warped Amy’s reality. For the last three years of her life, Tyler was with her every day when she’d beaten drugs and was close to beating alcoholism too. He also knew better than anyone the real Amy Winehouse who the tabloid-reading public rarely saw – the hilarious, uncompromising force-of-nature busy taking care of everyone else. We all think we know what happened to Amy Winehouse, but we don’t. This definitive insider’s story tells us all, finally, the truth. 'Heartbreaking' – The Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JESUS CHRIST will come soon (Revelation 1:7). He will return to bring an Eternal Kingdom of peace and righteousness for Himself and for His beloved disciples. Humankind, however, brought forth seven mighty World Empires: Proud Egypt, cruel Assyria, the "golden, silver and bronze" Empires of Babylonia, Persia and Greece (Book of Daniel) and, in recent times, the Empires of the Romans and the Arabs. They all made life difficult for believers, but could not overcome Israel and the confessing church. Now a last Empire, the eighth one, is just around the corner. The Bible predicts: One of the seven World Empires will rise again from the abyss of history and try to seize Zion (Jerusalem) and the absolute power. But which one will it be? Here comes the surprising answer to well-known scholars as Arnold Fruchtenbaum (The Footsteps of the Messiah) or Joel Richardson (The Islamic Antichrist; Mideast Beast; Mystery Babylon) - fresh from the land of the Reformation. Courageous writes for watchful contemporaries in Europe and America. He refutes today`s lightly accepted origin of the End Time evil and shows that neither Rome nor Mecca are the main source of grief and evil. The New End Time Exegesis (NEE) provides an unusually clear and, at the same time, brighter future perspective for the Christians of the West. Reader ́s Voices "The Revelation of John ... made easy." "Can 450 million believers be wrong?" "We Christians of the West are free again, free to do good - even though dark clouds are appearing on the horizon." "A book that was born in Bethlehem." Paperback Edition with eight maps of the Biblical World Empires complete with information on their spiritual character; history; geographical location and extension.
