Book excerpt: The Navy SEAL ethos of never leaving a shipmate behind is stretched to the limit through two generations of SEALS. Randall Jenkins has never given up on his BUD/s teammate, but due to failing health, he must recruit his son to carry on the search for Edgar Allan Jollar. The search takes place on three continents. Decades have gone by, and D. D. Jenkins takes up the search with very little hope of finding his father's shipmate. While Jenkins carries on the search for Jollar, Phung Tu, an NVA soldier, has carried on his fight against the Americans until they are driven out of his country. He never has forgotten the American blonde giant who frightened him so much as a boy and created the humiliation of having soiled himself in fear that night in the Mekong. His hatred of all things Western has driven him for all his years fighting for his country. Now middle age has found both Tu and Jollar; their lives have settled into a routine that has left the war behind. But unbeknownst to either man, they lives would continue to enmesh in ways neither man could fathom.

Book excerpt: Calvin Maxwell likes older men, and Turner Marsh is definitely the type of man he’s very much into. Growing up with only his mother by his side, Calvin can’t help but be attracted toward men who are much older than him. His father abandoned him and his mother when he was only four years old, choosing to marry someone new, have kids with her, and refuse any contact with him whatsoever. It’s not strange he has abandonment issues now as an adult. Turner has been single for nearly six years now. He was been dumped by his ex-boyfriend of almost twenty years because the man apparently needed someone fresh, someone more exciting. In other words, anyone but him. The first time they meet, Turner is instantly attracted to Calvin and, fortunately, Calvin likes him, too. Then Turner gets the invitation to attend his ex-boyfriend’s wedding. He brings Calvin along, but doesn’t expect his ex-boyfriend to proposition his new boyfriend. Emotions run high, threatening their new relationship. Can it survive?

Download or read book No Citizen Left Behind written by Meira Levinson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While teaching at an all-black middle school in Atlanta, Meira Levinson realized that students' individual self-improvement would not necessarily enable them to overcome their profound marginalization within American society. This is because of a civic empowerment gap that is as shameful and antidemocratic as the academic achievement gap targeted by No Child Left Behind. No Citizen Left Behind argues that students must be taught how to upend and reshape power relationships directly, through political and civic action. Drawing on political theory, empirical research, and her own on-the-ground experience, Levinson shows how de facto segregated urban schools can and must be at the center of this struggle. Recovering the civic purposes of public schools will take more than tweaking the curriculum. Levinson calls on schools to remake civic education. Schools should teach collective action, openly discuss the racialized dimensions of citizenship, and provoke students by engaging their passions against contemporary injustices. Students must also have frequent opportunities to take civic and political action, including within the school itself. To build a truly egalitarian society, we must reject myths of civic sameness and empower all young people to raise their diverse voices. Levinson's account challenges not just educators but all who care about justice, diversity, or democracy.

Download or read book On the Wrong Side of Just about Everything, But Right about It All written by Dale P. Crowley and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The pages of this book contain incontrovertible proof that our Lord was crucified and buried on Wednesday, not Friday; that those "left behind" are God's people, not the wicked; that America's heritage is Christian, not Judeo-Christian; that Israel-first Scofield dispensationalism is unbiblical and dangerous; that the invasion and occupation of Iraq was a terrible mistake; and that many other myths, dogmas, shibboleths and deceptions of Christianity today should be discarded and replaced by truth. These controversial and sometime explosive issues are dealt with by the author carefully, thoroughly, courageously, and biblically. The astonishing thing about these studies and commentaries is that they were actually broadcast, since 1979, on the Washington, D.C. region's oldest and most influential Christian radio station, WFAX 1220"--Page [4] Cover.
