Book excerpt: Abstract: An authoritative reference text for practitioners treating child obesity focuses on behavior therapy and examines much of the literature pertinent to obesity among children. Following discussions of the negative energy equation leading to obesity risk, methods for measuring and detecting obesity, and studies concerning the epidemiology and natural history of childhood obesity, attention is focused on 3 principle stages of behavioral treatment. Following this, discussions are presented on obstacles to successful behavior modification in obese children. While principle attention is given to children between 5-12 years of age, therapeutic approaches (dieting, physical exercise, surgery, and behavior therapy) also are discussed and compared for adolescent obesity. The text concludes with a summation of current unanswered questions, future research needs, and conclusions. Reference tables (growth charts, RDA's, caloric values in foods, triceps skinfold percentiles, etc.) and a detailed bibliography are presented in 7 appendices.

Book excerpt: Written by international experts in the field, this comprehensive book covers all aspects of obesity that may impact upon the practice of the anaesthetist, intensivist or other healthcare professional dealing with the obese patient. The information is presented in a logical manner--opening chapters cover the underlying pathophysiology of obesity and move on to discuss general risk factors, legal and ethical aspects of anaesthesia, changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, pre-operative assessment and management. The main section of the book then focuses on specific problems such as renal function, DVT, patient positioning, airway management and ventilation, pulse oximetry, TOE, brain monitoring and BIS, general, spinal and epidural anaesthesia, volatile anaesthetics and drug delivery. A final section includes chapters that detail the nursing, ICU and trauma management of the obese patient, and covers key topics such as anaesthesia for caesarean section, ECG, infection control, haemodynamic monitoring, post-anaesthetic care and postoperative analgesia.

Topics include the social and psychological factors that comprise the obese child's world; eating patterns early in life and their influence on adiposity later in development; two types of opoid peptides, their respective receptor sites, and the effects they produce when released; putative relationships between food preferences and obesity; relationships between inactivity and obesity; design and implementation of school-based programs to prevent obesity in school children; medical care to the obese child and family; metabolic factors of dieting; the role of parental and family influences in childhood obesity; and treatment intervention. The book is a must for advanced graduate students and practitioners in medicine and psychology dealing with child health. It is an invaluable reference for clinicians and researchers alike.

Summary Book Review Obesity :

Download or read book Obesity written by Meera Shekar and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity is a global ticking time bomb with huge potential negative economic and health impacts, especially for the poor. As of 2016, an estimated 44 percent of adults (more than two billion) worldwide are overweight or obese, and over 70 percent of them live in low- or middle-income countries, dispelling the myth that obesity is a problem only in high-income countries. The global obesity epidemic presents a formidable challenge to human capital acquisition, national wealth accumulation, and the goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity. Given the renewed global focus on human capital, its links to the obesity epidemic, and the growing evidence base for double- and triple-duty actions, there is both an urgent need for action and a great opportunity for engagement that will require both a whole-of-government and a whole-ofdevelopment-partner approach. Countries and global partners need to act urgently to address this ensuing epidemic, with emphasis on interventions that require corrective public action rather than one of individual responsibility.
