Summary Book Review Inner Sky :

Download or read book Inner Sky written by Rainer Maria Rilke and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2010 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damion Searls's translations of Rilke are wonderfully fresh and concentrated, and catch superbly that intent, listening quality which is perhaps the essential characteristic of this great poet's work. Rilke continues to fascinate, and in Searls we have a fascinating new interpreter. John Banville Reading these pages is like pulling out your pockets expecting to find nothing but lining, and discovering instead a neglected roll of bills. Pieces of Rilke's œuvre have been led out of the shadows by Damion Searls's original and revelatory translation to alter our understanding of the whole. William Gass Damion Searls wipes clean the often-foggy lens through which non-German readers of Rilke have hitherto experienced him, and the result feels like a dream in which you can understand perfectly a language you didn't think you knew. Rilke's thrilling precision and disorientations and purposefulness are all suddenly there in English. This book is a great way to embark or re-embark on the adventure of reading him. Jonathan Franzen No matter their level of familiarity with Rilke, The Inner Sky belongs on the bookshelf of any literature lover, thanks largely to Searls's deft translation and grouping of Rilke's work. This nontraditional collection predates prose poetry and short-short fiction, yet speaks to these contemporary styles of new craft. Rachel Mennies, ForeWord Magazine The Inner Sky is a new bilingual selection of Rainer Maria Rilke's poems and prose pieces, many of them little known and never before translated into English. These translations, by the NEA-and PEN-award-winning Damion Searls, present a significant new voice for Rilke, one more intimate than oracular. Here is Rilke, not in his usual role of channeling the gods, but looking up from a book, musing about the girls of his Czech homeland, sharing his hallucinatory dreams and the olfactory pleasures of keeping lemons on his writing desk in winter. Searls's selection of texts clusters around a handful of related images and ideas - birds and trees, giving and receiving, working and waiting, girlhood and gardens - and explores how we relate to both the outer world and the inner world of the imagination. Both general readers and students of Rilke will benefit from the German and French originals opposite the translations. An annotated chronology and an afterword on the art of translation complete this rich new volume, a necessary addition to even the most complete Rilke library and the perfect introduction for those just getting to know this perennial master. We are right at the start, do you see. As though before everything. With a thousand and one dreams behind us and no act. I can imagine no knowledge holier than this: that you must become a beginner. Someone who writes the first word after a centuries-long dash.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Hugo, whom Carolyn Kizer has called” one of the most passionate, energetic, and honest poets living,” here offers an extraordinary collection of new poems, each one a “letter” or a “dream.” Both letters and dreams are special manifestations of alone-ness; Hugo’s special senses of alone-ness, of places, and of other people are the forces behind his distinctively American and increasingly authoritative poetic voice. Each letter is written from a specific place that Hugo has made his own (a “triggering town,” as he has called it elsewhere) to a friend, a fellow poet, an old love. We read over the poet’s shoulder as the town triggers the imagination, the friendship is re-opened, the poet’s selfhood is explored and illuminated. The “dreams” turn up unexpectedly (as dreams do) among the letters; their haunting images give further depth to the poet’s exploration. Are we overhearing them? Who is the “you” that dreams?

Book excerpt: A comprehensive selection of poems and essays spanning the career of one of China's most celebrated 20th-century poets. "You can write poetry and then again you can't. It comes into this world of its own accord, not by the will of the poet."Gu Cheng Gu Cheng (1956-1993) is one of China's most celebrated contemporary poets. His early death ended a literary career that was influenced by the Cultural Revolution and that reawakened the lyricism of Chinese poets during the 1980s. Offering a unique blend of brooding imagism and political innuendo, Gu Cheng's poetry traces complex changes in the poet's lifefamilial, psychological, culturaland also radiates an innocence and a touching melancholy. His poetry began on the farms in Shandong province where his parents were exiled during the Cultural Revolution, and ended on a small island in New Zealand where he took up a Thoreau-like existence before his tragic suicide. His poem "One Generation" became emblematic for the generation coming of age in China in the '60s and '70s. Here for the first time is poetry based on the poet's own personal selections from his work, Sea Basket Blue. There are also prose works, including excerpts of Gu Cheng's novel Ying'er, plus a selection of his essays.

Our dreams are often confusing, nonsensical, downright strange, and at times even quite frightening. But they make great stories! They can also be the poems that our mind constructs in the quiet dark of the night, when daytime distractions fall by the wayside, and we are at the mercy of the goblins of our sleep.

Download or read book Chaucer's Dream Poetry written by Barry A. Windeatt and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1982 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes available in translation the texts that lie behind Chaucer's dream poems - l>The Book of the Duchess, The Parliament of Fowls, The House of Fame/l> and l>Prologue to the Legend of Good Women/l>. Chaucer's dream poems are now being increasingly studied and appreciated. With their attractively bookish dreamer figure and their graceful use of conventions and traditions, they have their distinctive place in Chaucer's work. But the nodern reader of these medieval poems particularly needs a sense of their literary context in the tradition of comparable narrative poems - largely in OId French - which Chaucer knew and drew upon. None of these French poems has ever been made available in English translation before, and many of the texts are difficult to access, being available only in dated French scholarly editions. The authors represented are Froissart, Machaut and Deschamps, as well as some minor and anonymous poems, and there are also relevant translations from Cicero and Boccaccio. The book gives an idea of what Chaucer's sources were in themselves, and in what ways the English poet was inspired to use and go beyond them, and this presents a picture of the poet at work. Some of the French poems are translated carefully by Chaucer, while with other poems he is selective, interested in certain sections of his sources only. In further cases, the original material can be seen to have provided a more general point of departure for Chaucer's own developments on his work.
