Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can science and religion coexist in harmony? Or is conflict inevitable? In this volume an international team of distinguished scholars addresses these enduring yet urgent questions by examining the lives of thirteen eminent twentieth-century scientists whose careers were marked by the interaction of science and religion: Rachel Carson, Charles A. Coulson, Theodosius Dobzhansky, Arthur S. Eddington, Albert Einstein, Ronald A. Fisher, Julian Huxley, Pascual Jordan, Robert A. Millikan, Ivan P. Pavlov, Michael I. Pupin, Abdus Salam, and Edward O. Wilson. The richly empirical studies show a diversity of creative engagements between science and religion that defy efforts to set the two at odds.

This book was released on 1996-11-30 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this first volume of ARCHIMEDES explicitly and intentionally cross boundaries between science and technology, and they also illuminate one another. The first three contributions concern optics and industry in 19th century Germany; the fourth concerns electric standards in Germany during the same period; the last essay in the volume examines a curious development in the early history of wireless signalling that took place in England, and that has much to say about the establishment and enforcement of standard methods in a rapidly-developing technology that emerged out of a scientific effect. Historical work over the last few decades has shown that technology cannot be characterized simply, or even usually, as applied science. The beliefs, the devices, and the natural objects that are created or discovered by scientists, often play altogether minor roles in the construction of technologies. Taking this realization as a given, the essays in Scientific Credibility and Technical Standards effectively argue that we must now seek to go beyond it; we must also begin to think carefully about the role that science actually did play when it was explicitly deployed by technologists.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on sciences in the universities of Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the chapters in it provide an overview, mostly from the point of view of the history of science, of the different ways universities dealt with the institutionalization of science teaching and research. A useful book for understanding the deep changes that universities were undergoing in the last years of the 20th century. The book is organized around four central themes: 1) Universities in the longue durée; 2) Universities in diverse political contexts; 3) Universities and academic research; 4) Universities and discipline formation. The book is addressed at a broad readership which includes scholars and researchers in the field of General History, Cultural History, History of Universities, History of Education, History of Science and Technology, Science Policy, high school teachers, undergraduate and graduate students of sciences and humanities, and the general interested public.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, 1906-1907, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Thought We may pass hurriedly over Commercial Law, merely remarking that the brief course, which is all there will be time for, should come towards the end of the period of study, and that it will not aim at anything so foolish as to make a man his own lawyer. So far we have remained on the circumference of the subject; we have not yet penetrated to the centre, which is the training of the judgment to deal with the actual problems of commercial life. We approach more closely to the essential purpose we have in mind when we come to the subject of Accounting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Work and Thought; No. 8, April 1908 Under ordinary conditions, in the absence of radioactive matter the time taken by the falling leaf to pass over the fixed portion of the scale is termed the natural leak of the electroscope. This natural leak is quite considerable, and the time may even amount to several hours. The presence inside the case of a comparatively weak radioactive substance reduces the leak to a few minutes, or even seconds. It is desirable to give some account of the reasons underlying this behaviour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
