Book excerpt: Highly Commended in the 2005 BMA Medical Book Competition The first edition of The Inner Apprentice proved to be a landmark publication. Now in its second edition, it includes an additional chapter in which questions the assumptions about the relevance of awareness-based teaching in the overcrowded curriculum of contemporary vocational training – and suggests that the curiosity they engender is more important than ever. This book offers many new ideas, techniques and educational tools, and will be of interest to general practice trainers and trainees, and anyone involved in an individual teaching relationship.

This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 1423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thomas Wingfold, Curate or The Curate's Awakening" is the first novel of the series that begins with the story of a compliant and lifeless curate in the Church of England and the profound changes that happen in his life and the people around him. Thomas Wingfold is a clergyman who is losing belief in the faith, but he goes through many transformations as the story unfolds. "Paul Faber, Surgeon or The Lady's Confession" is the sequel to The Curate's Awakening and it tells the story of a village doctor and a proven atheist. His friend and village curate, Thomas Wingfold is trying to bring him closer to the Church, but constantly ends up failing in those attempts. Doctor believes that only victories and tragedies of life can bring one to Jesus. However, after one accident, Faber saves life of a beautiful woman and they fall in love, but her secret past comes in between. "There and Back or The Baron's Apprenticeship" is the third and final novel that completes the series. Another story about finding faith in God follows a life-changing journey of Baron Richard from skeptical atheist to a true believer. The main character sets quite an example of manhood for young people. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle.

Marigold, a lovely young golden-haired wizardess, becomes destined to save her family, friends and her world after her father and mentor (wizards Vorn and Ranith) are presumed dead in the Wilds of Daksin. Tager, a dwarven prince and his loyal guard Tolkbin, must fulfill Ranith’s last wish to seek out the wizardess and a magical arrow she holds. Together, they set out on a journey joining forces along the way with the nimble elf Alory, tough as nails Cobalt the barbarian and Redlar a seasoned Trelonian Scout. The questors head west traversing strange lands, suffering numerous misfortunes and the dominion of death. Join them as they battle for survival against hideous monsters and malevolent beings. Vastly outnumbered by the powers of Sanrue’s evil realm, they forge on using their skills while creating strong friendships with an array of unlikely cohorts. The wizardess proves ever resilient as victory or defeat lies in the secret of Magic of Golden Sorrow. PROLOGUE "Those that practice the dark arts are responsible for your father’s death, sire. The people are afraid of these dark practitioners. I suggest you outlaw them and their arts." "What is the difference between them and you?" "My kind, sire, call upon the powers of this world…they call upon another." And so the young king did. The people were scared not knowing who would be cursed next. Panicked and frightened they rose up and slew those who practiced black magic. Outlawed and hunted, a mystical lot came into being. Seeking out more knowledge and power, they joined the different arts. Once finished combining, they called to the dark. Responding in answer, it started to talk. No one was fooled, but they did seek to tame the evil that answered and spoke in its name. As they learned more, they stored it in a book. They enchanted a symbol, so you could look. "The book!" screamed the witch. "The book!" Rising up in the dark of night, the hunted practitioners gathered around the witch, who kept uttering, "It is gone…it is gone." "Who was on watch?" hollered an ageing sorcerer. "It does not matter!" screamed the witch shrilly. "The only reason one would….would take it is to summon it." Silence as heavy as the mountain they dwelt in fell amongst the practioners. "It is Liben! He was on watch. I cannot find him," a pretty raven-haired sorceress spoke up, shattering the silence of the stillness surrounding them. "Outside!" yelled a grey-robbed warlock stepping back into the cavern. "They have found us." "We must fight then!" hollered the ageing sorcerer. "No! Stop him we must! Warn them!" she yelled. "No, witch!" the grey-robbed warlock declared. "We owe them nothing," he said, taking sides with the elderly sorcerer. "We have nothing left to live for. They killed most of our kind already. Leave them to their fate."

Book excerpt: Eric Banyon, also known as Bedlam's Bard, managed to rescue his young brother Magnus from what seemed to be a killer demon (in Mad Maudlin), but now he must rescue Magnus again, this time from their tyrannical parents. Eric does not look forward to the battle, but is confident he can gain custody. His financial sources are virtually unlimited, his friend Ria Llewellyn heads the most high-powered law firm in New York, and in a pinch he and his friends can use to magic powers, even flummoxing a DNA test, it comes to that. What Eric does not know is that his parents are allied with the evangelist Billy Fairchild, who himself is a tool of the evil Unseleighe elves, who feed off human sorrow and suffering. Fairchild specializes in getting "bad" children to shape up, which is accomplished by letting a soulsucker¾malevolent creature from the elf world¾drain the victim of all talent, creativity, and will, leaving an obedient zombie husk behind. If Magnus and his friend Ace, who is also on the run from her twisted parents, fall into Fairchild's hands, they will join the Unseleighe's zombie ranks. And Eric's bardic magic may not be enough to save them. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Book excerpt: An intimate narrative history of World War I told through the stories of twenty men and women from around the globe--a powerful, illuminating, heart-rending picture of what the war was really like. In this masterful book, renowned historian Peter Englund describes this epoch-defining event by weaving together accounts of the average man or woman who experienced it. Drawing on the diaries, journals, and letters of twenty individuals from Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Venezuela, and the United States, Englund’s collection of these varied perspectives describes not a course of events but "a world of feeling." Composed in short chapters that move between the home front and the front lines, The Beauty and Sorrow brings to life these twenty particular people and lets them speak for all who were shaped in some way by the War, but whose voices have remained unheard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The play was late in breaking up: old Barbara went more than once to the window, and listened for the sound of carriages. She was waiting for Mariana, her pretty mistress, who had that night, in the afterpiece, been acting the part of a young officer, to the no small delight of the public. Barbara's impatience was greater than it used to be, when she had nothing but a frugal supper to present: on this occasion Mariana was to be surprised with a packet, which Norberg, a young and wealthy merchant, had sent by the post, to show that in absence he still thought of his love. As an old servant, as confidant, counsellor, manager, and housekeeper, Barbara assumed the privilege of opening seals; and this evening she had the less been able to restrain her curiosity, as the favor of the open-handed gallant was more a matter of anxiety with herself than with her mistress. On breaking up the packet, she had found, with unfeigned satisfaction, that it held a piece of fine muslin and some ribbons of the newest fashion, for Mariana; with a quantity of calico, two or three neckerchiefs, and a moderate rouleau of money, for herself. Her esteem for the absent Norberg was of course unbounded: she meditated only how she might best present him to the mind of Mariana, best bring to her recollection what she owed him, and what he had a right to expect from her fidelity and thankfulness. The muslin, with the ribbons half unrolled, to set it off by their colors, lay like a Christmas present on the small table; the position of the lights increased the glitter of the gilt; all was in order, when the old woman heard Mariana's step on the stairs, and hastened to meet her. But what was her disappointment, when the little female officer, without deigning to regard her caresses, rushed past her with unusual speed and agitation, threw her hat and sword upon the table, and walked hastily up and down, bestowing not a look on the lights, or any portion of the apparatus.
