Download or read book Losing the Center written by Jeffrey Bloodworth and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans consider John F. Kennedy's presidency to represent the apex of American liberalism. Kennedy's "Vital Center" blueprint united middle-class and working-class Democrats and promoted freedom abroad while recognizing the limits of American power. Liberalism thrived in the early 1960s, but its heyday was short-lived. In L osing the Center, Jeffrey Bloodworth demonstrates how and why the once-dominant ideology began its steep decline, exploring its failures through the biographies of some of the Democratic Party's most important leaders, including Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Henry "Scoop" Jackson, Bella Abzug, Harold Ford Sr., and Jimmy Carter. By illuminating historical events through the stories of the people at the center of the action, Bloodworth sheds new light on topics such as feminism, the environment, the liberal abandonment of the working class, and civil rights legislation. This meticulously researched study authoritatively argues that liberalism's demise was prompted not by a "Republican revolution" or the mistakes of a few prominent politicians, but instead by decades of ideological incoherence and political ineptitude among liberals. Bloodworth demonstrates that Democrats caused their own party's decline by failing to realize that their policies contradicted the priorities of mainstream voters, who were more concerned about social issues than economic ones. With its unique biographical approach and masterful use of archival materials, this detailed and accessible book promises to stand as one of the definitive texts on the state of American liberalism in the second half of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering an unparalleled, sweeping survey of the political ideologies that have shaped our world, the seventh edition of Andrew Heywood's seminal undergraduate textbook continues to lead the way in guiding students through the political creeds and doctrines that have dominated politics past and present. Covering an impressive array of topics, the first half of the book focusses on traditional ideologies such as Conservatism, Socialism, Liberalism, Anarchism and Fascism, while more contemporary movements such as Populism, Feminism, Green Ideology, Multiculturalism and Religious Fundamentalism form the latter part of the text. Taking into account the remarkable events that have shaken the political sphere in recent years, the text has been revised and updated throughout in order to show how the study of political ideologies can elucidate the significance of such striking phenomena as the decline of liberal democracy and the rise of populist movements and authoritarianism around the world. The most accessible, concise and yet comprehensive introduction to the topic, this is an indispensable textbook for students studying for courses on political ideologies, political theory and introductory politics. It should be essential reading for anyone seeking to gain an understanding of political ideologies for the first time. New to this Edition: - A brand new chapter on Populism addressing the rise of populist movements across the world and the related decline of liberal democratic values - More on sexualities, queer politics and trans issues in the chapter on Feminism; and a wider range of religions considered in the chapter on Religious Fundamentalism - New Key Thinker boxes featuring a more diverse array of voices - A fully revised concluding chapter on 'Why Political Ideologies Matter' - Updated Political Ideologies in Action boxes reflecting on recent, major political events and their significant for political analysis - A completely refreshed companion website comprising a testbank, PowerPoint slides, flashcard glossary, additional 'Political Ideologies in Action' cases, and interactive simulations Accompanying online resources for this title can be found at bloomsburyonlineresources.com/political-ideologies-7e. Download or read book Nationalism, Liberalism, and Progress written by Ernst B. Haas and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has global liberalism made the nation-state obsolete? Or, on the contrary, are primordial nationalist hatreds overwhelming cosmopolitanism? To assert either theme without serious qualification, according to Ernst B. Haas, is historically simplistic and morally misleading. Haas describes nationalism as a key component of modernity and a crucial instrument for making sense of impersonal, rapidly changing, and heterogeneous societies. He characterizes nationalism as a feeling of collective identity, a mutual understanding experienced among people who may never meet but who are persuaded that they belong to a community of kindred spirits. Without nationalism, there could be no large integrated state. Nationalism comes in many varieties, some revolutionary in rejecting the past and some syncretist in seeking to retain religious traditions. Haas asks whether liberal nationalism is particularly successful as a rationalizing agent, noting that liberalism is usually associated with collective learning and that liberal-secular nationalism delivers substantial material benefits to mass populations. He also asks whether liberal nationalism can lead to its own transcendence. He explores nationalism in five societies that had achieved the status of nation-states by about 1880: the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Japan. Several of these nation-states became exemplars for later nationalists. A second, forthcoming volume will consider ten societies that modernized more recently, many of them aroused to nationalism by the imperialism of these "old" nation-states.

Download or read book The Liberal Manifesto written by Frank S. Smith and published by THE LIBERAL MANIFESTO. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AMERICA HAS REACHED AN UNPRECEDENTED TIME IN HISTORY WITH THE SAFETY, LIBERTY, AND PROSPERITY OF EVERY AMERICAN IN JEOPARDY. The moral fabric of America and the individual liberty of Americans continue to suffer unrelenting attacks. In his definitive new book, The Liberal Manifesto, Frank S. Smith presents a convincing case that America's decline is due to the unsustainable nature of the liberal ideology and a hidden agenda behind the liberal movement. He provides numerous examples of past and present efforts by liberal elites to manufacture circumstances and manipulate American ideals to conform to expectations that are unsustainable. These examples substantiate their abuse of power, breaking of laws, and socialistic efforts to precipitate an environment that is forcing Americans to become dependent on, and submissive to, government control. The Liberal Manifesto identifies six Convenience Doctrines (philosophies developed for the sake of convenience) that characterize the pretense of the liberal movement, and the motive behind each one. It shows how these philosophies, which appeal to the emotions of unwitting Americans, are spurious and unsustainable. The evidence in this book suggests that the more liberalism prevails, the more Americans will suffer. From socialist and communist parallels to the unsustainable nature of big government, The Liberal Manifesto illustrates the source of the problem. Thomas Jefferson advocated for a broadly educated citizenry because he believed that well-informed citizens "are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." If Americans wish to retain America's exceptionalism it will require citizens getting informed and getting involved.
