Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is sometimes said that the most segregated time of the week in the United States is Sunday morning. Even as workplaces and public institutions such as the military have become racially integrated, racial separation in Christian religious congregations is the norm. And yet some congregations remain stubbornly, racially mixed. People of the Dream is the most complete study of this phenomenon ever undertaken. Author Michael Emerson explores such questions as: how do racially mixed congregations come together? How are they sustained? Who attends them, how did they get there, and what are their experiences? Engagingly written, the book enters the worlds of these congregations through national surveys and in-depth studies of those attending racially mixed churches. Data for the book was collected over seven years by the author and his research team. It includes more than 2,500 telephone interviews, hundreds of written surveys, and extensive visits to mixed-race congregations throughout the United States. People of the Dream argues that multiracial congregations are bridge organizations that gather and facilitate cross-racial friendships, disproportionately housing people who have substantially more racially diverse social networks than do other Americans. The book concludes that multiracial congregations and the people in them may be harbingers of racial change to come in the United States.

Everything is going as planned or so she thinks. She’s just learned she’s expecting a baby, and is excited to share a life with her boyfriend and co-worker, Paxton Barrett. She and Paxton are perfect for each other even though he tends to be a bit immature and self-centered at times, but she hopes he’ll lose those bad habits. When she’s in his arms nothing else matters until his lack of enthusiasm for their upcoming wedding makes her doubt her future with him. When he leaves her at the altar, she starts to give up on her dreams as they come crashing down around her. Picking herself up, Harper creates a new life for herself. When Paxton returns, intent on re-kindling the flame she’s trying hard to extinguish, she realizes he’s not the only threat intent on keeping her from living her dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eagerly awaited, brilliant, and engaging new poems by Tony Hoagland, author of What Narcissism Means to Me The parade for the slain police officer goes past the bakery and the smell of fresh bread makes the mourners salivate against their will. —from "Note to Reality" Are we corrupt or innocent, fragmented or whole? Are responsibility and freedom irreconcilable? Do we value memory or succumb to our forgetfulness? Application for Release from the Dream, Tony Hoagland's fifth collection of poems, pursues these questions with the hobnailed abandon of one who needs to know how a citizen of twenty-first-century America can stay human. With whiplash nerve and tender curiosity, Hoagland both surveys the damage and finds the wonder that makes living worthwhile. Mirthful, fearless, and precise, these poems are full of judgment and mercy.

Summary Book Review Beyond the Dream Syndicate :

Download or read book Beyond the Dream Syndicate written by Branden Wayne Joseph and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tony Conrad has significantly influenced cultural developments from minimalism tounderground film, "concept art," postmodern appropriation, and the most sophisticated rockand roll. Creator of the "structural" film, The Flicker, collaborator on Jack Smith'sFlaming Creatures and Normal Love, follower of Henry Flynt's radical anti-art, member of the Theatreof Eternal Music and the first incarnation of The Velvet Underground, and early associate of MikeKelley, Tony Oursler, and Cindy Sherman, Conrad has eluded canonic histories. Yet Beyond the DreamSyndicate does not claim Conrad as a major but under-recognized figure. Neither monograph nor socialhistory, the book takes Conrad's collaborative interactions as a guiding thread by which toinvestigate the contiguous networks and discursive interconnections in 1960s art. Such an approachsimultaneously illuminates and estranges current understandings of the period, redrawing the mapacross medium and stylistic boundaries to reveal a constitutive hybridization at the base of thedecade's artistic development. This exploration of Conrad and his milieu goes beyond thepresentation of a relatively overlooked oeuvre to chart multiple, contestatory regimes of powersimultaneously in play during the pivotal moment of the 1960s. From the sovereign authority invokedby Young's music, to the "paranoiac" politics of Flynt, to the immanent control modeled byConrad's films, each avant-garde project examined reveals an investment within a particularstructure of power and resistance, providing a glimpse into the diversity of the artistic andpolitical stakes that continue to define our time.Branden W. Joseph is Professor of Modern andContemporary Art in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University and aneditor of the journal Grey Room (MIT Press).
