Book excerpt: Dr. Bethany Witt wasn't well liked, but Dr. Tara Ross was sure nobody wanted her colleague dead. That is until Tara finds the young woman embalmed and posed in the Barn, an annex of her office once used for embalming 100 years ago. It's a slam-dunk case when Troopers arrest Bethany's ill-tempered ex-boyfriend, a local funeral home employee, based on forensics linking him to the crime scene. Although it looks bad for Bethany's ex, Tara and her fiancé, NYPD Captain Jeffrey Corrigan, aren't convinced he's the right guy and search for another possible killer. Their investigation takes a twisted turn when Brewster Medical Center's CEO suffers the same gruesome fate. With Bethany's ex-boyfriend jailed, homicide investigator, Ty Marchinski, insists a copycat killer did in the CEO, dismissing Jeffrey's theory that the murders are related. Neither murders in his jurisdiction, Jeffrey has no choice but to heed to Ty's request to back off the case. However, Tara persists in her own investigation, determined to find The Embalmer. After she disappears, Jeffrey is back in the game, racing Ty to find the woman he loves before The Embalmer silences her.

Book excerpt: Tobias Enrem is a world-renowned artist, guided by the Expression (the godlike energy of creation). Tobias creates his works of art with human remains, which he sells in his underground black-market art galleries. Tobias Enrem is one of the most prolific serial killers the city of Houston, or the United States has ever known. Section one is comprised of selected letters Detective Stoltz received from serial killer, Tobias Enrem. Section Two, is comprised of the personal journal entries of Detective Stoltz, pertaining to Tobias Enrem's correspondence. Tobias Enrem shares his thoughts, beliefs, personal philosophies, and social paradigms with Detective Stoltz; along with a detailed description of his latest murdered victim. Contains extremely disturbing content. All cover, and front-matter artwork, was painted by Tobias Enrem. No human remains, or body parts, in any way, what so ever, were used during the creating process for these paintings; except for the use of human blood, which was mixed directly into the oil-based paint. The artwork within this book is what Tobias Enrem refers to as: Macabre Expressionism. Upon first glance, the eye can only see shapes, and colors. When the eyes gaze deeply into the artwork, the image will naturally appear before you.

Book excerpt: This book is the first complete edition of a hieratic-demotic papyrus preserved to this day in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The papyrus dates back to the middle of the second century B.C. and contains a minute discription of a considerable part of the embalming and burial rites of the Apis, the sacred bull of the Egyptians. The Vienna papyrus is the only authentic document to give a coherent picture of the course of events during the embalming of the holy animal, adding substantially to what we know already from the Serapeum stelae and the classical writers. The book comprises a general introduction, a translation with commentary, an annotated transcription, a glossary, several indexes and photos of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People, flowers, memories: how do we preserve the past? Set in the Lake District, the shifting mosaic of the narrative explores life, love and prejudice through three very different women: Ruth, a taxidermist; Madeleine, a widowed sheep-farmer; and Lisa, a mathematician. As Lisa is drawn into the group it becomes clear that the other women have strange secrets: Ruth's 'blogs' have an increasingly dark undertone - but these stark themes are offset by the warmth and humour of the rural community to which the women are bound. 'A charming, intelligent and engrossing book, with enough dark heart to drag it away from the domain of standard female fiction fare and into much more engaging territory. I found myself drawn in by the delicate prose and fascinating descriptions an engrossing and enjoyable read.' Kat Arney'A powerful and haunting story An exhilarating and compelling read.' Professor Sir John Sulston, Nobel Laureate'An intriguing novel in a haunting setting, rich in texture, humorous and concerned, raising important questions about science and our relation to the natural world, to the individuals we know and to the communities we live in. A lovely book.' Jenny Uglow 'A rich, absorbing, intriguing novel ... All of (the characters) felt like real people, whom I would want to know ... an absorbing, clever writer ...' Oxford Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cavitt Izon Breeze was born with a relatively rare eye disorder called micropthalmia, which means he has been totally blind since birth. At the very beginning of his life family member started to lay the framework for him to one day become totally independent. This independence requires preparing his mind, body, and spirit to respond to each life's event with proper thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to ensure proper development of his physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and moralistic well-being. These areas of development are the main subject of this book. Each issue, experience, accomplishment, and failure shared by the blind people in this book are addressed to Cavitt, who is five years old, but are applicable to any child who is blind and entering the pathway to independence. The stories you will read in this book are about real people with one thing in common, blindness. Some, like little Cavitt they were blind from birth. Others became blind shortly after birth but do not remember ever seeing. They all have a message, "I did it my way, and here is my way." These unique people, who are blind, expressed their mental and emotional selves in a manner that illustrated the physical, psychological, intellectual, social, and moralistic situations in their lives. They showed a willingness to live a life to its fullest despite their handicap.

Download or read book Death Is All around Us written by Jonathan M. Weber and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late nineteenth-century Mexico was a country rife with health problems. In 1876, one out of every nineteen people died prematurely in Mexico City, a staggeringly high rate when compared to other major Western world capitals at the time, which saw more modest premature death rates of one out of fifty-two (London), one out of forty-four (Paris), and one out of thirty-five (Madrid). It is not an exaggeration to maintain that each day dozens of bodies could be found scattered throughout the streets of Mexico City, making the capital city one of the most unsanitary places in the Western Hemisphere. In light of such startling scenes, in Death Is All around Us Jonathan M. Weber examines how Mexican state officials, including President Porfirio Díaz, tried to resolve the public health dilemmas facing the city. By reducing the high mortality rate, state officials believed that Mexico City would be seen as a more modern and viable capital in North America. To this end the government used new forms of technology and scientific knowledge to deal with the thousands of unidentified and unburied corpses found in hospital morgues and cemeteries and on the streets. Tackling the central question of how the government used the latest technological and scientific advancements to persuade citizens and foreigners alike that the capital city—and thus Mexico as a whole—was capable of resolving the hygienic issues plaguing the city, Weber explores how the state’s attempts to exert control over procedures of death and burial became a powerful weapon for controlling the behavior of its citizens.
