Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gertrude Stein called it “the only really modern novel form that has come into existence,” yet the mystery genre was a century old before it featured its first gay main character in a novel. Since then, gay and lesbian detective fiction has been one of the fastest growing segments of the genre. It incorporates gay and lesbian cultural elements and offers crossover appeal. Its authors call upon a century of development in the mystery genre, while providing new, more accurate images of lesbians and gay men than generally found in mainstream literature and popular media. This groundbreaking study of gay and lesbian detective fiction examines mystery series and historically significant stand-alone novels published since the early 1960s. Part I is an overview that describes how these novels make gay and lesbian life visible and forge new, powerful images. It also examines how they fit into the larger history of mystery fiction. The series analyses in Part II are grouped according to the type of main character (police officer, private investigator, amateur sleuth, etc.). Each section discusses main and secondary characters of that type, characteristic themes for the group, and more. The analyses of individual series cover main characters, themes, plot points and other elements. Comments from authors interviewed for this book play a central role in those analyses. Part III lists series-spanning themes (e.g., homophobia, the closet, gay marriage) and the novels and series that address each of those themes.

Book excerpt: Lesbian detective fiction’s radical origins took the mystery genre to the extreme of the rape of the detective. More contemporary works foreground lesbian sex, romance, and identity. As a result, lesbian detective fiction has not continued to develop and failed to engage a wider audience. The author’s analysis includes works by M.F. Beal, Stella Duffy, Katherine V. Forrest, Clare McNab, Barbara Wilson, and Eve Zaremba. This article originally appeared in Clues: A Journal of Detection, Volume 27, Issue 2.

Download or read book Embracing a Gay Identity written by Wilfrid R. Koponen and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a psychological analysis of the process of coming out for gay men in America since 1950. Koponen looks at the process as a series of steps in a hero's journey progressing from initial denial and anger to guilt, bargaining, and depression. The stages of acceptance and integration of a gay identity represent the goal of the quest. Providing the common ground on which to analyze the coming out process, Koponen uses gay male relationships portrayed in six important American novels--Falconer by John Cheever, City of the Night by John Rechy, Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, The Beautiful Room Is Empty by Edmund White, Dancer from the Dance by Andrew Holleran, and Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll by Paul Monette. This book not only is literary study, but also is intended to help gay men reflect on their shared lived experiences. Self-help exercises on identifying and examining the stages of coming out are provided throughout the analysis.

Download or read book Contemporary Gay American Novelists written by Emmanuel Sampath Nelson and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1993 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though wary of canon-formation in this groundbreaking work, editor Nelson has selected fifty-seven gay American fiction writers whose works have received critical acclaim. Writers and their works are examined in the gay literary context and a majority of the contributing essayists are themselves gay male scholars and writers, who bring with them a level of personal and political sensitivity that is generally lacking in assessments of this literature. Each entry begins with biographical information, proceeds to an interpretive summary of major works, provides an overview of critical reception, and concludes with bibliographies of primary and secondary materials. In a lively and perceptive introductory essay, Bredbeck inquires into what we mean by "gay literature" and the inherent tensions in these terms.
