Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, W. H. Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first in twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, among others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station. Alan Bennett's new play is as much about the theater as it is about poetry or music. It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion's spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is a tool for the teaching of the liberal arts in high school, or in the freshman year of college for those students whose high school studies were inadequate. It is intended to be at once a handbook and a textbook. As a handbook it should be used by the student throughout his four years in high school in every course. Every teacher in the school should insist that in each subject of the curriculum the processes of definition, statement, and argumentation outlined here should be exactly practiced in the student's reading recitation, discussion, and examination for that subject. In this way the transfer of training can be made explicit and effective. On the other hand this work is also a textbook to assist in the learning of these logical processes. The most appropriate place for its use is in the customary English courses. Here it will not replace the customary material but it will serve as a guide for teacher and student in using material to develop the liberal arts.

Book excerpt: "Leadership as a Habit of Mind is an insightful and original work. The book is compulsively readable for its stories of personal experiences that have shaped the way leaders think and act. Even better, it offers a new concept-"habits of mind"-that will help other leaders and would-be leaders to understand their own formative experiences and use them wisely." -HOWARD SCHULTZ, Chairman and Chief Global Strategist, Starbucks Coffee Company "What an amazing way to think about leadership! These fascinating real-leader stories persuasively teach that sustainable public victories come from the inner work of private victories." -Dr. STEPHEN R. COVEY, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People "A deeply moving book about leaders who know how to move leaders to great possibilities. Spiritual and practical. Complex and profoundly simple. "An important and unique addition to the leadership literature." -WARREN BENNIS, Distinguished Professor of Business, University of Southern California, and author of Managing the Dream and On Becoming a Leader "The mystery of leadership gets a jolt of real-life enlightenment thanks to Mackoff and Wenet's sparkling new book. The authors supply a big missing piece-what really goes on inside a leader's head-by tapping into some of the best leadership talent around and giving us a front-row seat to the way these people think. Instead of offering the same tired old profiles and how-tos, this book bristles with energy, originality, and oomph." -NANCY K. AUSTIN, coauthor, A Passion for Excellence "Enlightened leadership comes from within, as Drs. Mackoff and Wenet's provocative new book clearly illuminates. This intelligent, well-researched book should be required reading for executives and entrepreneurs alike, it is an invaluable guide for those who aspire to inspire the people and organizations that will flourish in this new century." -JANE ADAMS, author of Women on Top and Making Good: Conversations with Successful Men

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining select high points in the speculative tradition from Plato and Aristotle through the Middle Ages and German tradition to Dewey and Heidegger, Placing Aesthetics seeks to locate the aesthetic concern within the larger framework of each thinker's philosophy. In Professor Robert Wood's study, aesthetics is not peripheral but rather central to the speculative tradition and to human existence as such. In Dewey's terms, aesthetics is “experience in its integrity.” Its personal ground is in “the heart,” which is the dispositional ground formed by genetic, cultural , and personal historical factors by which we are spontaneously moved and, in turn, are inclined to move, both practically and theoretically, in certain directions. Prepared for use by the student as well as the philosopher, Placing Aesthetics aims to recover the fullness of humanness within a sense of the fullness of encompassing Being. It attempts to overcome the splitting of thought, even in philosophy, into exclusive specializations and the fracturing of life itself into theoretical, practical, and emotive dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the philosophies of art developed by the continental authors and studies of Anglo-American philosophers, this book presents a panorama of the philosophy of art. It discusses definitions offered from the analytical school including Arthur Danto's representationalism, Dipert's theories of artefactualism, Dickie's institutional and procedural theories and Levinson's historical and cultural theories. From the continental theories it reflects on Hegel's notion of philosophy of art, Martin Heidegger's and Hans Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic tradition and Alexius Meinong's theory of objects. This range of definitions and theories are judged and defended using a form of representationalism that begins with the results of Arthur Danto's thinking and integrates the aesthetic reflection of the Baumgarten School. The result is not only a presentation of philosophy of art from the beginning of the twentieth century to present day, but a study that proposes a theory capable of synthesizing the finest contributions of the analytic and continental traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy years ago, Mortimer Adler sat down at a manual typewriter. By his side was a list of authors, a pyramid of books and 102 great ideas—the 102 objects of thought that have collectively defined Western thought for more than 2,500 years. He began writing in alphabetical order beginning with "Angel" and ending with "World." The essays, originally published in the Syntopicon, were and remain the centerpiece of Encyclopaedia Britannica's Great Books of the Western World. These essays, never before available except as part of the Great Books, are, according to Clifton Fadiman, Adler's finest work. Each essay—"War and Peace," "Love," "God," "Truth"—treats each idea as if the original authors—from Homer to Freud, from Marcus Aurelius to Virginia Woolf—whose writings the ideas are drawn from, were sitting around a table, deep in conversation. His purely descriptive synthesis presents the key points of view on almost 3,000 questions without endorsing or favoring any one of them. More than a thousand pages, containing more than half a million words on more than two millennia of Western thought, The Great Ideas is a fitting capstone to the career of Mortimer J. Adler. The actual writing of the essays took 26 months, seven days a week and no vacations or recesses... Writing the 102 essays was like writing 102 books. I think it was the most arduous and demanding stint of writing I have ever undertaken. —Mortimer J. Adler

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conscience, once a core concept for ethics, has mostly disappeared from modern moral theory. In this book Douglas Langston traces its intellectual history to account for its neglect while arguing for its still vital importance, if correctly understood. In medieval times, Langston shows in Part I, the notions of &"conscientia&" and &"synderesis&" from which our contemporary concept of conscience derives were closely connected to Greek ideas about the virtues and practical reason, although in Christianized form. As modified by Luther, Butler, and Kant, however, conscience later came to be regarded as a faculty like will and intellect, and when faculty psychology fell into disrepute, so did the role of conscience in moral philosophy. A view of mature conscience that sees it as relational, with cognitive, emotional, and conative dimensions, can survive the criticisms of conscience as faculty. In Part II, through discussions of Freud, Ryle, and other modern thinkers, Langston proceeds to reconstruct conscience as a viable philosophical concept. Finally, in Part III, this better grounded concept is connected with the modern revival of virtue ethics, and Langston shows how crucial conscience is to a theory of virtue because it is fundamental to the training of any morally good person.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constituency for education and therapy in the arts is rapidly expanding beyond the conventional school and clinical settings to include the wider community. In Cultivating the Arts in Education and Therapy, Malcolm Ross integrates traditional Chinese Five Element Theory, also known as The Five Phases of Change, with contemporary Western psychological and cultural studies, to form a new Syncretic Model of creative artistic practice. The Syncretic Model is explored and validated through an analysis of interviews with practising, successful artists, and in a comprehensive review of the latest neuro-scientific research into human consciousness and emotion. The book addresses the well-documented difficulties experienced by arts teachers and therapists intervening in, supporting and evaluating the creative development of individual students and clients. This groundbreaking text repositions the arts as central to the effective initiation and management of change in contemporary society. Besides being of wide general interest, it will have particular relevance for practising and trainee arts teachers, arts therapists and community artists. With the demand for their services growing and pressure to demonstrate effectiveness mounting, the arts community is looking to build bridges between the different arts, and between arts education and therapy across national boundaries. This book offers a fresh, coherent, and challenging framework for a revitalized reflective practice from an experienced authority in the field.
