Book excerpt: Lamm redraws the map of American psychoanalytic argument and takes a fresh look at current debates on narrative truth, metapsychology, and the role of the past in theory and therapy. Rejecting the exclusivist claims of scientific and hermeneutic psychoanalysis, he argues that the task is no longer to unify psychoanalysis into a homogeneous discourse, but rather to ascertain the conditions under which each mode of discourse--history, science, and practice--is applicable and appropriate. If not sufficiently scrutinized, they sometimes lead to results far divergent from the initial intentions of those who put them forth as lines of orientation for practice. This seems to be also the case with the idea of "development", which has marked social and political practice in the second half of the 20 th Century. In this volume philosophers from different parts of the world discuss, and attempt to evaluate, from epistemological and ethical points of view, the idea of "development", as the principal objective of national and international policies during the past few decades.

This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Idea of the Cottage in English Architecture is a history of the late Georgian phenomenon of the architect-designed cottage and the architectural discourse that articulated it. It is a study of small buildings built on country estates, and not so small buildings built in picturesque rural settings, resort towns and suburban developments. At the heart of the English idea of the cottage is the Classical notion of retreat from the city to the countryside. This idea was adopted and adapted by the Augustan-infused culture of eighteenth-century England where it gained popularity with writers, artists, architects and their wealthy patrons who from the later eighteenth century commissioned retreats, gate-lodges, estate workers' housing and seaside villas designed to 'appear as cottages'. The enthusiasm for cottages within polite society did not last. By the mid-nineteenth century, cottage-related building and book publishing had slowed and the idea of the cottage itself was eventually lost beneath the Tudor barge-boards and decorative chimneystacks of the Historic Revival. And yet while both designer and consumer have changed over time, the idea of the cottage as the ideal rural retreat continues to resonate through English architecture and English culture.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2020 Baillie Gifford Prize A New Statesman Book of the Year This is the story of our quest to understand the most mysterious object in the universe: the human brain. Today we tend to picture it as a computer. Earlier scientists thought about it in their own technological terms: as a telephone switchboard, or a clock, or all manner of fantastic mechanical or hydraulic devices. Could the right metaphor unlock the its deepest secrets once and for all? Galloping through centuries of wild speculation and ingenious, sometimes macabre anatomical investigations, scientist and historian Matthew Cobb reveals how we came to our present state of knowledge. Our latest theories allow us to create artificial memories in the brain of a mouse, and to build AI programmes capable of extraordinary cognitive feats. A complete understanding seems within our grasp. But to make that final breakthrough, we may need a radical new approach. At every step of our quest, Cobb shows that it was new ideas that brought illumination. Where, he asks, might the next one come from? What will it be?

Book excerpt: Slavoj Žižek is undoubtedly one of the world's leading cultural critics. His witty, psychoanalytically-inspired analyses of contemporary society have almost single-handedly revived the notion of ideology. His brilliant commentaries on the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and the 19th century German Idealists have brought alive their often difficult ideas for a new generation of readers. But does Žižek have anything to say in his own right? Is there a system of thought that we can properly call " Žižekian"? This book argues that there is, through a reading of two terms in his work—the master-signifier and the act. Featuring an interview with Žižek himself, Slavoj Žižek: Live Theory presents a snapshot of the Žižek system ideal for undergraduates in social and cultural theory and philosophy.

Download or read book The Idea of the PhD written by Frances Jennifer Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Idea of the PhD: The doctorate in the twenty-first-century imagination analyses the PhD as it is articulated in diverse areas of contemporary discourse at a time in which the degree is undergoing growth, change and scrutiny worldwide. It considers not just institutional ideas of the PhD, but those of the broader cultural and social domain as well as asking whether, and to what extent, the idea of the Doctor of Philosophy, the highest achievable university award, is being reimagined in the twenty-first century. In a world where the PhD is undergoing significant radical change, and where inside universities, doctoral enrolments are continually climbing, as the demand for more graduates with high-level research skills increases, this book asks the following questions: How do we understand how the PhD is currently imagined and conceptualised in the wider domain? Where will we find ideas about the PhD, from its purpose, to the nature of research work undertaken and the kinds of pedagogies engaged, to the researchers who undertake it and are shaped by it? International in scope, this is a text that explores the culturally inflected representation of the doctorate and its graduates in the imagination, literature and media. The Idea of the PhD contributes to the research literature in the field of doctoral education and higher education. As such, this will be a fascinating text for researchers, postgraduates and academics interested in the idea of the university.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming the Archive: Feminism and Film History brings together a diverse group of international feminist scholars to examine the intersections of feminism, history, and feminist theory in film. Editor Vicki Callahan has assembled essays that reflect a range of methodological approaches—including archival work, visual culture, reception studies, biography, ethno-historical studies, historiography, and textual analysis—by a diverse group of film and media studies scholars to prove that feminist theory, film history, and social practice are inevitably and productively intertwined. Essays in Reclaiming the Archive investigate the different models available in feminist film history and how those feminist strategies might serve as paradigmatic for other sites of feminist intervention. Chapters have an international focus and range chronologically from early cinema to post-feminist texts, organized around the key areas of reception, stars, and authorship. A final section examines the very definitions of feminism (post-feminism), cinema (transmedia), and archives (virtual and online) in place today. The essays in Reclaiming the Archive prove that a significant heritage of film studies lies in the study of feminism in film and feminist film theory. Scholars of film history and feminist studies will appreciate the breadth of work in this volume.

This book was released on 2003-09-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive scholarly literature, written in the past century holds that in ancient Greek and Roman thought history is understood as circular and repetitive - a consequence of their anti-temporal metaphysics - in contrast with Judaeo-Christian thought, which sees history as linear and unique - a consequence of their messianic and hence radically temporal theology. Gerald Press presents a more general view - that the Graeco-Roman and Judaeo-Christian cultures were fundamentally alien and opposed cultural forces and that, therefore, Christianity's victory over paganism included the replacement or supersession of one intellectual world by another - and then shows that, contrary to this view, there was substantial continuity between "pagan" and Christian ideas of history in antiquity, rather than a striking opposition between cyclic and linear patterns. He finds that the foundation of the Christian view of history as goal-directed lies in the rhetorical rather than the theological motives of early Christian writers.

Book excerpt: This edited collection examines time and its relationship to and impact upon media industries, studying how the media industry views time and makes business and economic decisions based on considerations of time. Contributions from an international set of authors analyze time constraints and competition between different media; the quantity and quality of time spent in media consumption, audience and readership time valuation/costing/pricing; and the emergence of new media businesses around individual time management. Specific topics examined in the volume include: * a philosophical look at the concept of time and its application to media markets; * temporal aspects of media distribution for the media industries, and how time affects their activities; * the impact of increasing media industry consolidation and convergence on managerial effectiveness; * approaches to time by CNN and its various cache of news channels, in a managerial context; * the application of niche theory as a framework to examine competition between the Internet and television; * Internet access in the United Kingdom and Europe, examining the cost of time for online access; * the exchange of time and money in the television market for advertising; and * a summary of research and an agenda for future research on the topic of time's role in the media industry and markets. With its origins in the third World Media Economics conference, held in 2000, Time and Media Markets is a distinctive and important collection appropriate for scholars and advanced students in media management and economics.
