This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of physicists' quest to answer a mind-boggling question: How can we travel through time? Since H. G. Wells' 1895 classic The Time Machine, readers of science fiction have puzzled over the paradoxes of time travel. What would happen if a time traveler tried to change history? Would some force or law of nature prevent him? Or would his action produce a "new" history, branching away from the original? In the last decade of the twentieth century a group of theoretical physicists at the California Institute of Technology undertook a serious investigation of the possibility of pastward time travel, inspiring a serious and sustained study that engaged more than thirty physicists working at universities and institutes around the world. Many of the figures involved are familiar: Einstein, Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne; others are names known mostly to physicists. These are the new time travelers, and this is the story of their work--a profoundly human endeavor marked by advances, retreats, and no small share of surprises. It is a fantastic journey to the frontiers of physics. Some images in the ebook are not displayed owing to permissions issues.

Book excerpt: This thought-provoking collection not only takes us into the past and the future, but also explores what might happen if we attempt to manipulate time to our own advantage. These stories show what happen once you start to meddle with time and the paradoxes that might arise. It also raises questions about whether we understand time, and how we perceive it. Once we move outside the present day, can we ever return or do we move into an alternate world? What happens if our meddling with Nature leads to time flowing backwards, or slowing down or stopping all together? Or if we get trapped in a constant loop from which we can never escape. Is the past and future immutable or will we ever be able to escape the inevitable? These are just some of the questions that are raised in these challenging, exciting and sometimes amusing stories by Kage Baker, Simon Clark, Fritz Leiber, Christopher Priest, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Robert Silverberg, Michael Swanwick, John Varley and many others.

Download or read book Time Travel written by Nikk Effingham and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are various arguments for the metaphysical impossibility of time travel. Is it impossible because objects could then be in two places at once? Or is it impossible because some objects could bring about their own existence? In this book, Nikk Effingham contends that no such argument is sound and that time travel is metaphysically possible. His main focus is on the Grandfather Paradox: the position that time travel is impossible because someone could not go back in time and kill their own grandfather before he met their grandmother. In such a case, Effingham argues that the time traveller would have the ability to do the impossible (so they could kill their grandfather) even though those impossibilities will never come about (so they won't kill their grandfather). He then explores the ramifications of this view, discussing issues in probability and decision theory. The book ends by laying out the dangers of time travel and why, even though no time machines currently exist, we should pay extra special care ensuring that nothing, no matter how small or microscopic, ever travels in time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years numerous films, television series, comic books, graphic novels and video games have featured time travel narratives, with characters jumping backward, forward and laterally through time. No rules govern time travel in these stories. Some characters move by machine, some by magic, others by unexplained means. Sometime travelers can alter the timeline, while others are prevented from causing temporal aberrations. The fluid forms of imagined time travel have fascinated audiences and prompted debate since at least the 19th century. What is behind our fascination with time travel? What does it mean to be out of one's own era? How do different media tell these stories and what does this reveal about the media's relationship to time? This collection of new essays--the first to address time travel across a range of media--answers these questions by locating time travel narratives within their cultural, historical and philosophical contexts. Texts discussed include Doctor Who, The Terminator, The Georgian House, Save the Date, Back to the Future, Inception, Source Code and others.

As a documentary? A work of fiction? Or a factual account? Insiders know best. Although some passages from the book could appear as phantasmagoric and unrealistic depictions of events, the majority of its contents is based upon facts and events which occurred as described in the book. Of course, names were either camouflaged or altered in order to protect the identity of some officials who were part of this drama, whether their participation was accidental or voluntary. Nevertheless, the veracity of the accounts should not be denied or challenged, for the incidents which are presented to you did occur despite the facts that some events were dramatized. Area 51, Dulce Base, genetic programs, collaboration with non-terrestrial beings, and black ops can no longer be ignored or refuted.

For the 20th, electric and gasoline power, aircraft, nuclear weapons, even ventures into space. Today, the planet is awash with electronic business, chatter and virtual-reality entertainment so brilliant that the division between real and simulated is hard to discern. But one new idea from the 19th century has failed, so far, to enter reality—time travel, using machines to turn the time dimension into a two-way highway. Will it come true, as foreseen in science fiction? Might we expect visits to and from the future, sooner than from space? That is the Time Machine Hypothesis, examined here by futurist Damien Broderick, an award-winning writer and theorist of the genre of the future. Broderick homes in on the topic through the lens of science as well as fiction, exploring some fifty different time-travel scenarios and conundrums found in the science fiction literature and film.

An unexpected trip to London was supposed to be the perfect distraction from Anna’s stress-filled life. Minding her own business, drooling over so many jewels, Anna Waters winds up hopelessly lost and finds herself locked in the infamous tower. Who knew an antique locket would lead her to a knight with a heart buried underneath thirty feet of stone? Searching for a way out, she stumbles over an antique locket with half the picture missing. Lightning strikes and when Anna wakes…she’s still in the Tower of London…700 years in the past. She crossed an ocean of time for him. Can she save them both before it’s too late? John Thornton almost lost his head and saw his family ruined all because of a woman. Presumed dead, he became the infamous bandit of the wood. Captured and awaiting execution in the Tower of London, a strange woman appears out of the darkness. As they flee across England, John finds himself chipping away at the stone surrounding his heart. And longing for a life with his mysterious rescuer. No matter the cost. Book 2 Forever Knight A tiny scrap of fabric sent her hurtling through time… Elizabeth Smith was good at taking charge. Fixing what she believed was wrong with the world. And then she met a lazy knight with no desire to better himself. A wager lost… Before the rakes of the regency period, there was Robert Thornton, Lord Highworth. Content to spend his days drinking, wenching, and hunting, Robert cared not what happened in the world around him. Let his brothers see to war and fighting. Perhaps if he drank enough he could forget the faces of the dead. Sparks ensue… When Robert offers the strange lass up as the wager, Elizabeth vows to hate him forever. Wanting nothing to do with the lass with beguiling eyes, Robert doesn’t know whether to kill her or kiss her… Book 3 First Knight Tumble through time… A dig on the border of Scotland sends a free-spirited damsel tumbling through time to medieval England. Jennifer Wilson was happy spending the summer on a dig and putting off finding a job. When the earth swallows her during a terrible storm, she finds herself looking at a bustling Somerforth Castle not the ruins she'd been painting. Medieval England is full of interesting sights...and knights. Perhaps she could stay a week or two, it would be the adventure of a lifetime. Pre-occupied with war, Edward Thornton has met strange lasses before. He suspects from whence she comes. But a dangerous threat across the border threatens to tear them apart. Book excerpt: There are no paradoxes in time, only looped back versions of history we call alternate realities. Under the sands of Egypt and near the Sphinx, two amateur archeologists make a most unexpected find. Instead of a Pharaohs tomb, they uncover an ancient, dust-choked room filled with books, computers and modern equipment. The tomb is least five thousand years old. Slowly, the young spelunkers unravel the mystery of the apparent paradox. They also discover a working Time Machine. Time itself has taken an alternate course. The powerful European Trade Confederation bullies a depressed, non-nuclear United States. The British Empire controls their colonial possessions with an iron fist. Time for the young discoverers is running out. Global events are slowly colliding where retaining the secret of their discovery is almost impossible. A race develops to get the secrets of time travel out of the country.

Most scientists and mathematicians agree that time travel by humans is probably impossible, yet they have not been able to offer conclusive proof. This book describes how the very nature of time remains a fascinating and complex subject, whether viewed from the perspective of Einstein's relativity or the nanoscale realm of quantum physics. Readers will recognize notable fictional works in literature, film, and television in which time travel serves as a useful plot device as well as a means of examining human history and contemporary social issues.

Book excerpt: As this book is a real story that depicts real events, there is no fancy flying saucers or huge explosions and effects. There are no space creatures and aliens although I am not discounting anyone that has seen them. This is a real story that appears normal on the surface, except for prison time as most people do not go to prison (I don’t think). The prison time, although abnormal for most of the population is a normal prison (I suppose as I haven’t been to too many). However, it is within this buried dark place, where the seed of interest was planted and started to grow. This seed occurred yet before prison in the Hip Hop Studio of my former home; Muzak Studios where I encountered strange anomalies while recording. Coupling this with a dream I had while in prison, stirred the passion and lust for learning in this field. After my release, I was embraced with a world of technology and information that was unprecedented before my release and I have leveraged that to learn more about this phenomenon of time travel and distortion.
