Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Tyndale's importance in the history of biblical translation is well understood, his theology has been much less studied. Ralph Werrell has become the leading authority on his theology, and in The Blood of Christ in the Theology of William Tyndale, he explores the background to and influences on one of Tyndale's central theories. Werrell shows that Tyndale's ideas were developed independently, based on a wide range of earlier theology, and - in particular - from Wycliffite thought. He explains the way in which Old Testament sacrifice featured in Tyndale's thought, explaining his many references to the Epistle to the Hebrews, linking as it does Christ's sacrificial blood with the sacrifices of the Old Testament. Tyndale believed that man died spiritually through Adam's disobedience, and that it was brought back to life by Christ's blood. In this volume, Werrell brings out the differences between the covenant theology of Tyndale and both Luther's theology of the cross and Calvin's forensic justification, showing clearly the originality of Tyndale's beliefs.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A consistent, indigenous English doctrine of scriptural perspicuity correlates with a commitment to the availability of the vernacular scriptures in English and supports the English roots of the Early English Reformation (EER). Although political events and figures dominate the EER, its religious component springing from John Wyclif and streaming throughout the tradition must be recognized more widely. This book critically surveys the doctrine of scriptural perspicuity from the beginning of the Church in the first century (noted as early as John Chrysostom) through the seventeenth century, examining its impact on the current debates concerning competing hermeneutical systems, reader response hermeneutics, and the debates in conservative American Presbyterianism and Reformed theology on subscription to the Westminster Confession of Faith, the length of «creation days», and other issues.

Book excerpt: Ralph Werrell acknowledges that the great reformer was undoubtedly influenced by continental theology, but he focuses on the richness of the man's intellectual background. Tyndale's theological roots lie in the Lollard tradition, but the expression and thrust of his writings show that there was a lot more to this man.

This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly revised and enlarged edition of John Witte's authoritative historical study explores the interplay of law, theology, and marriage in the Western tradition. Witte uncovers the core beliefs that formed the theological genetic code of Western marriage and family law. He explores the systematic models of marriage developed by Catholics, Lutherans, Calvinists, Anglicans, and Enlightenment thinkers, and the transformative influence of each model on Western marriage law. In addition, he traces the millennium-long reduction of marriage from a complex spiritual, social, contractual, and natural institution into a simple private contract with freedom of entrance, exercise, and exit for husband and wife alike. This second edition updates and expands each chapter and the bibliography. It also includes three new chapters on classical, biblical, and patristic sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the current state of research in the field of the spiritual in British literature, where spirituality is understood as a culturally-determined, universal phenomenon or a factuality of humanity, consisting of the living apprehension of the 'Sacred' during rare gratuitous moments of illumination. With critical essays by scholars working in various disciplines (English studies, music, the arts, psychology, theology, etc.), the book explores a corpus of encoded narratives of - as well as reflections on - the 'Sacred' in British literature, from the Late Middle Ages to the present. Multi-disciplinary in nature and interdisciplinary in method, British Literature and Spirituality illustrates the hermeneutic potential of readings that transcend the disciplinary boundaries of spiritual writings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original essays in Oxford Twenty-First Century Approaches to Literature mean to provoke rather than reassure, to challenge rather than codify. Instead of summarizing existing knowledge scholars working in the field aim at opening fresh discussion; instead of emphasizing settled consensus they direct their readers to areas of enlivened and unresolved debate. The deepest periodic division in English literary history has been between the Medieval and the Early Modern, not least because the cultural investments in maintaining that division are exceptionally powerful. Narratives of national and religious identity and freedom; of individual liberties; of the history of education and scholarship; of reading or the history of the book; of the very possibility of persuasive historical consciousness itself: each of these narratives (and more) is motivated by positing a powerful break around 1500. None of the claims for a profound historical and cultural break at the turn of the fifteenth into the sixteenth centuries is negligible. The very habit of working within those periodic bounds (either Medieval or Early Modern) tends, however, simultaneously to affirm and to ignore the rupture. It affirms the rupture by staying within standard periodic bounds, but it ignores it by never examining the rupture itself. The moment of profound change is either, for medievalists, just over an unexplored horizon; or, for Early Modernists, a zero point behind which more penetrating examination is unnecessary. That situation is now rapidly changing. Scholars are building bridges that link previously insular areas. Both periods are starting to look different in dialogue with each other. The change underway has yet to find collected voices behind it. Cultural Reformations volume aims to provide those voices. It will give focus, authority, and drive to a new area.

Download or read book Hamlet in Purgatory written by Stephen Greenblatt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hamlet in Purgatory, renowned literary scholar Stephen Greenblatt delves into his longtime fascination with the ghost of Hamlet's father, and his daring and ultimately gratifying journey takes him through surprising intellectual territory. It yields an extraordinary account of the rise and fall of Purgatory as both a belief and a lucrative institution--as well as a capacious new reading of the power of Hamlet. In the mid-sixteenth century, English authorities abruptly changed the relationship between the living and dead. Declaring that Purgatory was a false "poem," they abolished the institutions and banned the practices that Christians relied on to ease the passage to Heaven for themselves and their dead loved ones. Greenblatt explores the fantastic adventure narratives, ghost stories, pilgrimages, and imagery by which a belief in a grisly "prison house of souls" had been shaped and reinforced in the Middle Ages. He probes the psychological benefits as well as the high costs of this belief and of its demolition. With the doctrine of Purgatory and the elaborate practices that grew up around it, the church had provided a powerful method of negotiating with the dead. The Protestant attack on Purgatory destroyed this method for most people in England, but it did not eradicate the longings and fears that Catholic doctrine had for centuries focused and exploited. In his strikingly original interpretation, Greenblatt argues that the human desires to commune with, assist, and be rid of the dead were transformed by Shakespeare--consummate conjurer that he was--into the substance of several of his plays, above all the weirdly powerful Hamlet. Thus, the space of Purgatory became the stage haunted by literature's most famous ghost. This book constitutes an extraordinary feat that could have been accomplished by only Stephen Greenblatt. It is at once a deeply satisfying reading of medieval religion, an innovative interpretation of the apparitions that trouble Shakespeare's tragic heroes, and an exploration of how a culture can be inhabited by its own spectral leftovers. This expanded Princeton Classics edition includes a new preface by the author.
