Book excerpt: The Perfect Game makes use of musical theater form to weave together two narratives. In the "historical" story, a young man out on his firs teaching job is given an assignment by his boss. Devise a new game for physical education students. That teacher, James Naismith, fulfills his assignment and invents what he hopes will prove to be a perfect game. His students like to play what they call: "Basket-Ball." In the other story, two of today's basketball coaches, Nancy and Frank, have their own issues to overcome. They wind up coaching together while falling in love. The two stories are woven together when the historic Jim Naismith becomes a mentor figure for today's coach Nancy. They have some intense discussions over the true nature of basketball. Both stories are resolved in the context of the final game, The Home Team against their Arch Rivals. Down by point, the Home Team's desperate last second shot, may or may not go in.

Download or read book The Perfect Game written by Roy B. Merritt and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-05-20 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a championship-bound coach (Patrick Duffy) adds some notoriously untalented kids to his team on a bet, the players view it as their chance to learn from the master. But the scheming coach has other plans, which include not letting them play. When young Kanin and friends uncover the plot and the coach is dismissed, the team disintegrates--or does it? With the help of Kanin's determined mom (Tracy Nelson) and a past-his-prime coach (a blustery Ed Asner), the multiracial, coed team pulls it together enough to make it to the playoffs, where they face... you guessed it, Duffy and his new team. The latest in a long line of underdog kids sports movies, which started with The Bad New Bears, this 96-minute film from Disney TV has neither the wit nor the grit of its inspiration, but it serves as reasonable family entertainment. Baseball fans will have to forgive its casual approach to the rules of the game, however. (Ages 5 and older).

Arlington Aces’ backup catcher Ian Pratt lives every day to the fullest, focusing on having fun with the three Bs: babes, booze, and baseball. Life’s too short not to go out with a smile on his face. For Pauly Byrne, being the only female starting pitcher in professional baseball means she’s determined, deliberate, and always staying one step ahead of the naysayers. Facing a difficult choice, she must decide whether to hang up her cleats to become the first woman to coach an NCAA baseball team or hold on to the unlikely dream of becoming the first to play in the Major League. Either way, she needs to win this season’s championship. When Pauly’s usual catcher fails a drug test going into playoffs, Ian is thrust into the starting role, where their differences—and an unlikely attraction—threaten to derail their season. Their futures are on the line, but can these two total opposites find enough common ground to win the big game and a shot at happily ever after? Sensuality Level: Sensual

Atlanta Braves: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports THE TEAM: The Braves are the oldest continuously operated franchise in National League history and are one of just six Major League clubs with more than 10,000 victories—that's more than the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees and nearly 1,000 more than the Philadelphia Phillies (though the Phils have lost 10,000-plus games). In baseball's modern era the Braves franchise has won three World Series titles, 17 Pennants, and made 21 playoff appearances ... not to mention an unprecedented run of 14 consecutive Division Titles and the team of the 1990s under the leadership of Bobby Cox. A virtual who's who of Hall of Fame legends also claim the Braves as their home team: Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews and Phil Niekro to name a few. THE FORMAT: Atlanta Braves: An Interactive Guide to the World of Sports is composed of ten chapters, each offering numbered "mini stories"—facts, anomalies, records, coincidences, and enthralling lore and trivia from Hall of Fame legends Aaron, Spahn, Mathews and Niekro to future Hall of Famers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Chipper Jones, to contemporary stars Brian McCann, Dan Uggla and Tim Hudson. Each chapter begins with an introduction that highlights the many exciting stories found in these pages such as the "Worst-to-First" 1991 Braves, the legendary career of Manager Bobby Cox, the unprecedented Cy Young success for the Braves during the 1990s, the team's greatest sluggers, and the greatest feats and most astounding records in franchise history. SPORTS BY THE NUMBERS books are not just for diehard sports fans, but for every fan and sports history reader who loves sports and wants to know more about their heroes and favorite teams—and this title is the definitive source for history and trivia on your Atlanta Braves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other sport, baseball has developed its own niche in America’s culture and psyche. Some researchers spend years on detailed statistical analyses of minute parts of the game, while others wax poetic about its players and plays. Many trace the beginnings of the civil rights movement in part to the Major Leagues’ decision to integrate, and the words and phrases of the game (for example, pinch-hitter and out in left field) have become common in our everyday language. From AARON, HENRY onward, this book covers all of what might be called the cultural aspects of baseball (as opposed to the number-rich statistical information so widely available elsewhere). Biographical sketches of all Hall of Fame players, owners, executives and umpires, as well as many of the sportswriters and broadcasters who have won the Spink and Frick awards, join entries for teams, owners, commissioners and league presidents. Advertising, agents, drafts, illegal substances, minor leagues, oldest players, perfect games, retired uniform numbers, superstitions, tripleheaders, and youngest players are among the thousands of entries herein. Most entries open with a topical quote and conclude with a brief bibliography of sources for further research. The whole work is exhaustively indexed and includes 119 photographs.

Book excerpt: Among baseball achievements, the perfect game one in which no runners reach base remains the greatest. Though many have come close, only 20 pitchers have achieved such perfection in more than a century of baseball. This exhaustive compendium examines the fascinating story behind every perfect game and uncovers details both great and small, illuminating the majesty of these titanic achievements. The faithfully narrated record of all 20 games punctuated by statistics, trivia, little-known anecdotes, and personal memories from both witnesses and the pitchers themselves gets inside the minds of the players who made baseball history. In addition to profiling some of the game s greatest pitchers, such as Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, and Randy Johnson, or others including Charley Robertson who had otherwise unremarkable careers, this updated edition features new chapters devoted to Dallas Braden, Mark Buehrle, and Roy Halladay, the three latest pitchers to throw a perfect game, and a comprehensive appendix profiles several pitchers who almost achieved perfection."
