Download or read book The Neumann Compendium written by John Von Neumann and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After three decades since the first nearly complete edition of John von Neumann's papers, this book is a valuable selection of those papers and excerpts of his books that are most characteristic of his activity, and reveal that of his continuous influence. The results receiving the 1994 Nobel Prizes in economy deeply rooted in Neumann's game theory are only minor traces of his exceptionally broad spectrum of creativity and stimulation. The book is organized by the specific subjects-quantum mechanics, ergodic theory, operator algebra, hydrodynamics, economics, computers, science and society. In addition, one paper which was written in German will be translated and published in English for the first time. The sections are introduced by short explanatory notes with an emphasis on recent developments based on von Neumann's contributions. An overall picture is provided by Ulam's, one of his most intimate partners in thinking, 1958 memorial lecture. Facsimilae and translations of some of his personal letters and a newly completed bibliography based on von Neumann's own careful compilation are added.

Summary Book Review Compendium for Literates :

Download or read book Compendium for Literates written by Karl Gerstner and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1974 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Gerstner is one of Switzerland's—and therefore the world's—best and best-known graphic and typographic designers. His high ambition in this book, first published in German in 1972, is to provide a complete and systematic taxonomy of writing, a programmed investigation into the underlying structure of script and type; Gerstner writes that his book is meant to "encompass the aspects and possibilities of the alphabet in their totality." It is this systematic and programmatic approach that sets the book apart. Most studies of typography and its larger graphic setting and context are concerned with the history of the development of writing and printing, or are collections of typographic models or typical examples, or are textbooks on layout and design. This one is organized into five sections that take up, in turn, Script and Speech—the relation between writing and language, different alphabets, reading directions (the eye follows directions and moves in a direction), style; Manual Graphics or craft—materials, tools, methods, procedures, reproductive techniques; Images—letter pictures, word pictures, sentence pictures, handwriting, size, proportion, type weight, form, harmony, texture, brightness, color; Function—as effected through dimensioning, spacing, grouping, layout, integration; and Expression—as achieved through coordination, articulation, emphasis, diversion, and the spirit of play. As a physical object, the book is more than a passive repository of examples of typographic display. It makes a dynamic and integrated typographic statement of its own and as a whole as it progresses and develops in accordance with its internal program. The book is nearly square and opens vertically rather than horizontally. Type is printed on only one side of the sheets, which are folded back on themselves along the outer edge to form double leaves, so that there is no distracting show-through "noise." There are words printed in blind embossing and stencil cutouts. And color is used with an elegant restraint, appearing only at the book's mid-section climax—its very sparseness amid the prevailing sharp black and white contributes a luxurious effect.

Book excerpt: This book provides thorough descriptions of a wide range of neuropsychological tests that are commonly used to assess general intellectual ability; language; visual, auditory, and tactile ability; motor skill; and personality, as well as for a number of lesser known tests which have not been formally published. Among the tests discussed are such widely used instruments as the Stanford-Binet, MMPI, PASAT, and Purdue Pegboard. Instructions for administration, approximate time for administration, scoring procedures, sample score sheets, normative data, and information on reliability and validity are presented. The authors also discuss when a given test may be of particular use and emphasize clinically useful means for making inferences about the functional integrity of brain regions. A very practical resource, the book will help clinicians select appropriate tests for the evaluation and treatment of neuropsychological disorders. It will also alert clinicians and researchers to eh psychometric properties of their instruments.
