Book excerpt: I challenge you to ponder, for just a while about what the passing of time has meant to you so far, what it means to you now, and how you might consider it in the future. I hope, by highlighting and reflecting on the different aspects of the passage of time and thus bringing it to your attention, it may cause you to consider where you have been on your journey and where you are now. Whether you manage your time, with anticipation and excitement or regret of what could have been. Perhaps by considering what has been, you may find yourself searching for a new approach as to how you might spend your time in the future.

This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of contemporary fiction is a fascinating yet challenging one. Contemporary fiction has immediate relevance to popular culture, the news, scholarly organizations, and education – where it is found on the syllabus in schools and universities – but it also offers challenges. What is ‘contemporary’? How do we track cultural shifts and changes? The Routledge Companion to Twenty-First Century Literary Fiction takes on this challenge, mapping key literary trends from the year 2000 onwards, as the landscape of our century continues to take shape around us. A significant and central intervention into contemporary literature, this Companion offers essential coverage of writers who have risen to prominence since then, such as Hari Kunzru, Jennifer Egan, David Mitchell, Jonathan Lethem, Ali Smith, A. L. Kennedy, Hilary Mantel, Marilynne Robinson, and Colson Whitehead. Thirty-eight essays by leading and emerging international scholars cover topics such as: • Identity, including race, sexuality, class, and religion in the twenty-first century; • The impact of technology, terrorism, activism, and the global economy on the modern world and modern literature; • The form and format of twenty-first century literary fiction, including analysis of established genres such as the pastoral, graphic novels, and comedic writing, and how these have been adapted in recent years. Accessible to experts, students, and general readers, The Routledge Companion to Twenty-First Century Literary Fiction provides a map of the critical issues central to the discipline, as well as uncovering new perspectives and new directions for the development of the field. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of contemporary literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern philosophical thought has a manifold tradition of emphasising ‘the moment’. ‘The moment’ demands questioning all-too-common notions of time, of past, present and future, uniqueness and repetition, rupture and continuity. This collection addresses the key questions posed by ‘the moment’, considering writers such as Nietzsche, Husserl, Benjamin and Badiou, and elucidates the connections between social theory, philosophy, literary theory and history that are opened up by this notion.

This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry of life in literature and through literature, and the vast territory in between - as vast as human life itself - where they interact and influence each other, is the nerve of human existence. Whether we are aware of it or not, we are profoundly dissatisfied with the stark reality of life's swift progress onward, and the enigmatic and irretrievable meaning of the past. And so we dramatise our existence, probing deeply for a lyrical and heartfelt yet universally valid sense of our experience. It is in great works of literature that we seek those hidden springs that so move us. It is in honour of this search that this collection focuses on the creative imagination at work in literature and aesthetics.

Download or read book Twentieth-century English History Plays written by Niloufer Harben and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1988 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers the clearest definition yet of the history play, its scope and its limits. Historical drama is an extremely popular genre among 20th-century English playwrights. Yet the sheer size and complexity of the subject has, until now, prevented critics from attempting a clear definition. Dr. Harben provides a new and original perspective, taking into account modern ideas of and attitudes to history. The author examines the varying approaches to history taken by modern historians and playwrights, and provides a detailed analysis of the historical source material of selected plays. The study is supported with a wealth of vivid and provocative illustrations. Historical and dramatic criticism is related to theatrical interpretation and experience. This book therefore should prove valuable and interesting to the reader with a specialist interest in the field as well as to the more general reader.

Download or read book When the Eternal Can Be Met written by Corey Latta and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Eternal Can Be Met excavates the philosophy behind the theology of the twentieth century's most prominent Christian writers: C. S. Lewis, T. S. Eliot, and W. H. Auden. These three literary giants converted to Christianity within little more than a decade of one another, and interestingly, all three theological authors turned to the theme of time. All three authors also came to remarkably similar conclusions about time, positing that the temporal present moment allowed one to meet the eternal. Decades before Lewis, Eliot, and Auden sought to creatively construct a fictive or poetic theology of time, the prominent philosopher Henri Bergson wrote about time's power to transform an individual's emotional and spiritual state, a theory well known by Lewis, Eliot, and Auden. When the Eternal Can Be Met argues that one cannot fully understand Lewis, Eliot, and Auden's theology of time without understanding Bergson's theories. From the secular philosophy of Bergson dawned the most important works of literary theology and treatments of time of the twentieth century, and in the Bergson-influenced literary constructs of Lewis, Eliot, and Auden, a common theological articulation sounds out--time present is where humans meet God.

Each chapter explores the different ways you can tell your own stories, considers why you might choose to tell them and helps you to create a patchwork of tiny tales about your life, however small they might be. Throughout the book, Laura shares her own personal stories and research that shows you how to tune out of the bigger picture and focus on the everyday. It’s easy to feel that our own lives are not enough, but real lives are not defined by bright, exciting events: we don’t need a grand narrative arc. It’s the stretches of time in between that matter, the tiny moments and the daily choices that make us who we are.
