Download or read book Punishment and Social Control written by Stanley Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While crime, law, and punishment are subjects that have everyday meanings not very far from their academic representations, "social control" is one of those terms that appear in the sociological discourse without any corresponding everyday usage. This concept has a rather mixed lineage. "After September 11" has become a slogan that conveys all things to all people but carries some very specific implications on interrogation and civil liberties for the future of punishment and social control. The editors hold that the already pliable boundaries between ordinary and political crime will become more unstable; national and global considerations will come closer together; domestic crime control policies will be more influenced by interests of national security; measures to prevent and control international terrorism will cast their reach wider (to financial structures and ideological support); the movements of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers will be curtailed and criminalized; taken-for-granted human rights and civil liberties will be restricted. In the midst of these dramatic social changes, hardly anyone will notice the academic field of "punishment and social control" being drawn closer to political matters.Criminology is neither a "pure" academic discipline nor a profession that offers an applied body of knowledge to solve the crime problem. Its historical lineage has left an insistent tension between the drive to understand and the drive to be relevant. While the scope and orientation of this new second edition remain the same, in recognition of the continued growth and diversity of interest in punishment and social control, new chapters have been added and several original chapters have been updated and revised.

Book excerpt: I entered the New York Police Academy in 1965 and my first assignment was to the 23rd Precinct and then 13th Precinct on patrol and also with their Anti-Crime Unit. In 1970 I attended the Criminal Investigations Course and was assigned to Plainclothes duties with the Organized Crime Control Bureau investigating Gambling, Prostitution and Narcotics violations in Queens County. In 1974 I was transferred to the Special Operations Section. This unit was tasked with the investigation and surveillance of the Five New York Crime Families (Gambino, Columbo, Genovese, Giganti and Luchese). For several months I operated in an undercover capacity posing as a corrupt officer during which time the operation netted over $50,000 in cash and merchandise including an all- expense paid trip to Las Vegas for myself and my partner. We were being tested to see if we really were corrupt. As a result of this investigation over 40 members of Organized Crime were arrested and convicted. In 1979 I was promoted to Detective 3rd Grade and transferred to Queens County District Attorney’s Squad, where I continued my investigations of Organized Crime with the investigation of John Gotti and his crime family. This investigation led to my promotion to Detective 2nd Grade. In 1985 I retired after 20 years of service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this nuanced and detailed study of newspaper reporting during the escalation of the second Intifada in the fall of 2000, Daniel Dor shows how real events are subject to distortion and manipulation by the media. In an analysis of the heart of Israel's media establishment -- the newspapers Yediot Ahronot, Ma'ariv, and Ha'aretz -- he finds a wide gap between the reality reported by field reporters and the eventual newspaper accounts framed by editors. Led by beliefs, opinions, and emotional responses rather than the facts provided by their reporters, these editors created a platform on which a new and fearful narrative for Israeli--Palestinian relations was built. Yet while Dor demonstrates that the media construct the news rather than simply report it, his sophisticated analysis also shows that no one entity or person is responsible. Rather than a supreme authority, Dor argues, it is the influence of fear, anger, ignorance, and a desire to please and sell newspapers that threatens the freedom of the press in a liberal democracy.

Book excerpt: Every American man, woman and child has been taught that the Bill of Rights guarantees our freedom. But, such semantics repeated enough over two hundred years have left us blissfully ignorant to reality. The Bill of Rights is a blue print for freedom and two centuries after our founding it has become a symbol of that freedom. But there is no magic contained within that parchment. The magic is embodied in the American people, because we will only continue to enjoy our freedom as long as we are willing to fight for it. At some point or another in our history our government has violated virtually every right ever promised to the people in the Bill of Rights. Laws, executive orders, court rulings and brute force physical actions that were clearly unconstitutional have been perpetrated by all three branches of our government, sometimes collectively. And there is no indication that these assaults on our freedom are decreasing, even at this late date and time in our history. In the final analysis the greatest threats to our freedom will never come from some evil, foreign, mustachioed dictator. Rather they will come from some very well meaning patriotic Americans determined to save us from ourselves.

Book excerpt: You may never again think of Canadians as law-abiding Respected crime reporters Peter Edwards and Michel Auger have pooled their research and expertise to create The Encyclopedia of Canadian Organized Crime. Sometimes grim, sometimes amusing, and always entertaining, this book is filled with 300 entries and more than 150 illustrations, covering centuries of organized crime. From pirates such as “Black Bart,” who sheltered in isolated Newfoundland coves to strike at the shipping lanes between Europe and the North American colonies, all the way to the most recent influx of Russianmobsters, who arrived after the end of the Cold War in 1989 and are now honing their sophisticated technological skills on the Western public, Edwards and Auger enumerate the personalities and the crimes that have kept Canadian law enforcement busy. Here too are the Sicilian and Calabrian gangs, the American and Colombian drug connections, the bikers whose internal struggles have left innocent bystanders dead (and who tried to murder Auger), as well as many unexpected figures, such as the Sundance Kid, who spent years in Canada. Arranged in alphabetical entries for easy browsing, and illustratedthroughout with photographs and drawings, this is a book that will both entertain and inform.

Book excerpt: July 12, 1979: The fearsome Bonanno family boss, Carmine Galante, is gunned down in a gruesome ambush at a Brooklyn restaurant. The hit launches an FBI investigation that soon becomes the largest in the bureau's history, as agents uncover a trail leading to a clandestine arm of the Sicilian Mafia. Evidence points to an all but unknown criminal franchise at work in the U.S. within the strife-torn Cosa Nostra. The mystery deepens. Surveillance photos snapped secretly from FBI vans and lookouts in Queens and Brooklyn show a cast of characters the bureau's mob experts cannot identify. What is in the cartons these Sicilians are loading into the trunks of their Mercedes? Who is trying to spirit $60 million out of the country and why? And where is the mountain of money coming from? The FBI has stumbled across a billion-dollar drug pipeline that is funneling tons of Turkish morphoine base to Sicilian labs and heroin into the United States through pizza parlors, cafes, and boutiques. Where the French Connection ends, the Pizza Connection begins. This is the dramatic inside story of that historic case and the struggle of the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Customs Service, and New York Police Department to deal the Mafia a crippling blow. The early 1980s are a crucial time for the FBI. It is emerging from the debacles of J. Edgar Hoover's administration, which long refused to acknowledge traditional organized crime, and is about to take on a new assignment policing anti-drug laws alongside the DEA. The exploding case is assigned to an unlikely pair of agents: the intense, Sicilian-born Carmine Russo and the laid-back Charlie Rooney. Together with an expanding army of investigators in the U.S. and abroad, they follow a trail that leads from sidewalk pizzerias and pay phones in Long Island, New Jersey, and rural Illinois, to bank vaults and hideouts in Miami, the Bahamas, Zurich, Palermo, Rio, Madrid, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Thousands of hours of wiretapped conversations and surveillance photos reveal a deadly, shadowy world of coded messages, midnight dropoffs of heroin packed in paper bags and shirt boxes, and vast fortunes laundered through some of America's biggest brokerage firms. But the crimelords Russo and Rooney stalk are not their only nemesis; they must also fend off jealous and impatient bureaucrats, and more than once crooked cops come close to blowing the case.
