Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When readers become victims of the murder mysteries they are immersed in, when superheroes embark on a quest to challenge their authors or when the fictional rock band Gorillaz flirt with Madonna during their performance, then metalepsis in popular culture occurs. Metalepsis describes the transgression of the boundary between the fictional world and (a representation of) the real world. This volume establishes a transmedial definition of metalepsis and explores the phenomenon in twelve case studies across media and genres of popular culture: from film, TV series, animated cartoons, graphic novels and popular fiction to pop music, music videos, holographic projections and fan cultures. Narrative studies have considered metalepsis so far largely as a phenomenon of postmodern or avant-garde literature. Metalepsis in Popular Culture investigates metalepsis’ ties to the popular and traces its transmedial importance through a wealth of examples from the turn of the 20th century to this day. The articles also address larger issues such as readerly immersion, the appeal of complexity in popular culture, or the negotiation of fiction and reality in media, and invite readers to rethink these issues through the prism of metalepsis.

This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Communications - Journalism, Journalism Professions, grade: 8.5, NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences (NHTV Breda), course: Bachelor Thesis Graduation, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to identify the latest television trends and their impact on the Dutch television market. In order to identify the latest trends, two research questions were formulated: “Which trends can be recognized on the international television market?” and “How will these trends influence the Dutch television market?” A qualitative content analysis has been conducted in which ten leading channels and producers are researched. The Content Analysis resulted in six major trends: Scripted Media, Dating, Interactivity, VOD, All-in-One App and Drones. Ten professionals discussed all trends and their potential impact during personal interviews. The professionals agreed that VOD (Video On Demand) would have the largest impact on the Dutch television industry. Besides that, the VOD trend was linked to the popularity of the Scripted Media. Most of the trends seem to ignite from modern technologies such as Apps, Internet websites and Social Media. As a result of my research, I recommend my company (Dutch Camels Media) and the media industry to focus on Internet as the future preferred platform for television. Television shows can be sold online, shows can be promoted online and VOD channels could be launched here. Besides that, inspiration for new television shows can be found in simple videos, discussions or forums online. I also recommend constantly search for new trends. Professionals could not agree if VOD will be the end of linear television or not. Further research is necessary to gain more insight in this matter. The findings of this research document resulted in many new format ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Point of Sale offers the first significant attempt to center media retail as a vital component in the study of popular culture. It brings together fifteen essays by top media scholars with their fingers on the pulse of both the changes that foreground retail in a digital age and the history that has made retail a fundamental part of the culture industries. The book reveals why retail matters as a site of transactional significance to industries as well as a crucial locus of meaning and interactional participation for consumers. In addition to examining how industries connect books, DVDs, video games, lifestyle products, toys, and more to consumers, it also interrogates the changes in media circulation driven by the collision of digital platforms with existing retail institutions. By grappling with the contexts in which we buy media, Point of Sale uncovers the underlying tensions that define the contemporary culture industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Spanbauer is one of the most enchanting writers in America today, and In the City of Shy Hunters, his first novel in ten years, is a "rich and colorful" portrait of New York in the 1980s, told with "raw power" (David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle). Shy, afflicted with a stutter, and struggling with his sexuality, Will Parker comes to New York to escape the provincial western towns where he grew up. In New York, he finds himself surrounded for the first time by people who understand and celebrate his quirks and flaws. He also begins an unforgettable love affair with a volatile, six-foot-five African-American drag queen and performance artist named Rose. But even as he is falling in love with Rose and growing into himself, Will must watch as AIDS escalates from a rumor into a devastating tragedy. When a vicious riot erupts in a local park, Will seizes the chance to repay the city for all it has taught him, in a climax that will leave readers shaken, fulfilled, and changed. "In the City of Shy Hunters is so finely crafted ... you'll think you've been reading a modernist classic." — Peter Kurth, Salon.com "Spanbauer's genius resides even in the asides ... teas[ing] out the genuine complexity of human love." — Thomas McGonigle, The Washington Post Book World "Ambitious and compelling ... a mixture of the ghastly, the hilarious, and the curiously touching." — John Hartl, The Seattle Times "In the City of Shy Hunters has the earmarks of a literary landmark ... Its importance and originality are unmistakable." — Laura Demanski, The Baltimore Sun
