Book excerpt: He Made Them Feel Beautiful, Special and Adored... Tall, blond and strikingly handsome with penetrating icy green eyes, Glen Rogers could use his knee-weakening charm to entice lonely women out of romantically lit bars and into the night. Each one thought she had found the perfect man--until Roger got her alone and turned on her in a bloody rage that would end in her own violent death... Then He Led Them Like Lambs to the Slaughter... In all, four women would find out too late the deadly truth. For underneath his Prince Charming facade, Roger hid a twisted fury that could only be sated by strangling or stabbing beautiful, vulnerable women. Finally, after a gruesome six-week killing spree that shocked the nation and landed Rogers on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list, he was caught in a grueling twenty-mile high-speed chase. Smooth Operator Here is the fascinating true story of one of the most notorious serial killers in history--a man who used his fatal charms to lure innocent women into a cruel date with destiny... By Clifford L. Linedecker, and with 8 pages of startling photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like all skilful authors, the composer of the biblical books of Luke and Acts understood that a good story requires more than a gripping plot - a persuasive narrative also needs well-portrayed, plot-enhancing characters. This book brings together a set of new essays examining characters and characterization in those books from a variety of methodological perspectives. The essays illustrate how narratological, sociolinguistic, reader-response, feminist, redaction, reception historical, and comparative literature approaches can be fruitfully applied to the question of Luke's techniques of characterization. Theoretical and methodological discussions are complemented with case studies of specific Lukan characters. Together, the essays reflect the understanding that while many of the literary techniques involved in characterization attest a certain universality, each writer also brings his or her own unique perspective and talent to the portrayal and use of characters, with the result that analysis of a writer's characters and style of characterization can enhance appreciation of that writer's work.

Download or read book Local and Analytic Cyclic Homology written by Ralf Meyer and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2007 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodic cyclic homology is a homology theory for non-commutative algebras that plays a similar role in non-commutative geometry as de Rham cohomology for smooth manifolds. While it produces good results for algebras of smooth or polynomial functions, it fails for bigger algebras such as most Banach algebras or C*-algebras. Analytic and local cyclic homology are variants of periodic cyclic homology that work better for such algebras. In this book, the author develops and compares these theories, emphasizing their homological properties. This includes the excision theorem, invariance under passage to certain dense subalgebras, a Universal Coefficient Theorem that relates them to $K$-theory, and the Chern-Connes character for $K$-theory and $K$-homology. The cyclic homology theories studied in this text require a good deal of functional analysis in bornological vector spaces, which is supplied in the first chapters. The focal points here are the relationship with inductive systems and the functional calculus in non-commutative bornological algebras. Some chapters are more elementary and independent of the rest of the book and will be of interest to researchers and students working on functional analysis and its applications.

Book excerpt: Everyone can become a hero. We have an inbuilt program for it, but few choose to activate it or know where to begin. Learn about your inner hero in terms of Jungian and Freudian psychology, creative writing theory, sympathetic magic, NLP, Nietzsche and existentialism. En route, you will discover the horrors of the ultimate jail - the Panopticon. You will stumble through Derrida's method of deconstruction and learn if you are living in bad faith. Is The Matrix the ultimate hero tale, and Neo the supreme hero? How does Bicameralism, Julian Jaynes's theory that gods once "lived" in the right hemisphere of the human brain fit in with the hero archetype? What is the tragic tale of the Lady of Shalott? This is a book in a controversial series by the Pythagorean Illuminati. Do not read this book if you are a "cheap" person, an Abrahamist, a David Icke conspiracy theorist; if you are close-minded, petty, and a "moaner". The world is sick of people like you. Heroes are never whiners and whingers.

Book excerpt: The Cop in the Twilight Land: Swedish Police Narratives 1965-2010 considers Swedish culture and ideas in the period 1965-2010 as expressed in detective fiction and film in the tradition of Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. It takes the Swedish police narrative tradition to be part and parcel of the European history of ideas and culture; a history that necessarily comprises America, by extension a European colonial power, which in the process of constructing its national identity eradicated its native population. From being a feared and despised the police emerged as a hero and part of the modern social project of the welfare state after World War II. Establishing themselves artistically and commercially in the forefront of the genre, Sjöwall-Wahlöö established a model for using the police novel as an instrument for ideological criticism of the Swedish welfare state under the Social Democratic government. With varying political affiliations this has been carried on by authors such as Olov Svedelid, Leif GW Persson, Jan Guillou, Henning Mankell, Håkan Nesser, Anders Roslund & Börge Hellström, Stieg Larsson and film such as "Beck", "Wallander" and "Johan Falk".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the representational geographies of the Bond film franchise and how they inform our reading of 007 as a hero. Offering a new and interdisciplinary lens through which the franchise can be analyzed, Funnell and Dodds explore a range of topics that have been largely, if not entirely, overlooked in Bond film scholarship. These topics include: the shifting and gendering of geopolitical relations; the differing depiction and evaluation of vertical/modern and horizontal/pre-modern spaces; the use of classical elements in defining gender, sexuality, heroic competency, and geopolitical conflict; and the ongoing importance of haptics (i.e. touch), kinesics (i.e. movement), and proxemics (i.e. the use of space) in defining the embodied and emotive world of Bond. This book is comprehensive in nature and scope as it discusses all 24 films in the official Bond canon and theorizes about the future direction of the franchise.

Book excerpt: Language and Social Change in China: Undoing Commonness through Cosmopolitan Mandarin offers an innovative and authoritative account of the crucial role of language in shaping the sociocultural landscape of contemporary China. Based on a wide range of data collected since the 1990s and grounded in quantitative and discourse analyses of sociolinguistic variation, Qing Zhang tracks the emergence of what she terms “Cosmopolitan Mandarin” as a new stylistic resource for a rising urban elite and a new middle-class consumption-based lifestyle. The book powerfully illuminates that Cosmopolitan Mandarin participates in dismantling the pre-reform, socialist, conformist society by bringing about new social distinctions. Rich in cultural and linguistic details, the book is the first of its kind to highlight the implications of language change on the social order and cultural life of contemporary China. Language and Social Change in China is ideal for students and scholars interested in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, and Chinese language and society.

Book excerpt: Alien conqueror, Anton Frozos, sends Robert Wilson, a top graduate of a spy-training program, to Earth to gain influence and prime the planet for its eventual conquest. Robert uses his advanced knowledge and technology to amass significant power and fortune in the business world. However, Robert has concealed aspects of his past from Frozos, which may complicate his loyalty. When Frozos’s forces arrive several years later, Robert must decide whether to support the man who has lifted him from a life of enslavement or defect and ally with Earth. This choice forces Robert to insert himself into the political process, opposing American President Nick Neverian, as the planet decides whether to forcefully resist invasion or accept Frozos’s demands. Robert’s own past with President Neverian, a one-time ally and now foe, further complicates his decision-making. As the crisis builds, will nations be brought to the brink of war? Will governments be toppled while the world reckons with Frozos’s army amassing in the sky?
